Tavares interview: Hawaiian wants to show Simpson all he?s learned from living in Sin City

Brad Tavares caught some bad breaks during Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," but his luck is turning.

In his first "name" UFC fight, he got Phil Baroni, who was on his last legs. Tavares blasted out Baroni in the first round and got premium exposure on ION. Then less than a month ago, the promotion called him with an opportunity to fight another middleweight veteran in Aaron Simpson. Simpson's original opponent, Jason Miller was moved into a coaching on TUF and the 23-year-old Tavares jumped at the opportunity to replace him at UFC 132.

"I know that he possesses that real high pedigree in wrestling," Tavares said of Simpson, who first wrestled for Arizona State and then served as a coach for the Wildcats. "He trains with [Ryan] Bader and [C.B.] Dolloway, and all those other really good wrestlers. So that's something been working, takedown defense and sweeps, and getting back up, and keeping it on the feet."

Tavares' confidence is sky high. He made the decision a few years ago to leave his native Hawaii to train in Las Vegas, first with Shawn Tompkins and now with Xtreme Couture, where he works his striking with Ray Sefo and wrestling with Neil Melanson. He also drives a short way to work his jiu-jitsu game with Robert Drysdale.

"Hawaii's expensive. Everybody can't train twice a day, three times a day like you can out here," Tavares told RawVegas.tv while speaking in the bowels of Las Vegas' MGM Grand. "[Back in Hawaii] they need to work a full-time job and then after that they need to find the time to train."

When fighters do they train in Hawaii, they just can't find the same level of coaching and training partners present in a place like Las Vegas.

Tavares (7-0, 2-0 UFC) was going tit for tat with Court McGee during the TUF 11 semifinals when he was rocked and finished in the final 20 seconds of the fight. McGee went on to win the TUF 11 Finale and that six-figure contract. The Hawaiian would love a rematch with McGee, but first comes the 36-year-old Simpson (8-2, 4-2 UFC). The older Simpson is a minus-250 favorite.

Picture gets a little more clear on where Marquardt screwed up

In an effort to clear up his suspension by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission and firing by the UFC, Nate Marquardt spoke to one media outlet on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that still left plenty of unanswered questions.

Larry Pepe from PROMMARadio, a media member very familiar with the issue of PED's from his experience in the world of bodybuilding, joined ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to discuss the issues he had with Marquardt's story.

According to Marquardt and is manager Lex McMahon, he was allowed to fight at UFC 128 in New Jersey even though he was in the midst of actually getting the therapeutic use exemption necessary for approved use of testosterone replacement therapy. The New Jersey State Athletic Commission Board allowed Marquardt to fight with the understanding that he would be tested before and after his fight against Dan Miller. That included going off TRT for eight weeks after the fight to find out if his normal testosterone levels warranted TRT use.

NJSACB legal counsel Nick Lembo said Marquardt went through the process and was officially denied the exemption last week and the news was delivered to the PSAC, last Friday, the day before the UFC on Versus 4 weigh-in. Why was he denied? That seems odd because Lembo also said the postfight testing actually justified Marquardt's use of TRT. So what went wrong?

MMAjunkie indicates that the hang up came with Camp Marquardt's choice of doctor.

All [tests] came back within the acceptable range per the NJSACB's guidelines on exemptions. When he sought to return to the therapy, however, he did so with his personal doctor, who is not an endocrinologist.

[...] Lex McMahon, Marquardt's manager, said the NJSACB had previously raised concerns about the treatment Marquardt was receiving.

"The commission sent a very clear statement that the doctor he was using had been incomplete, (and he) was using protocols that were not approved by the [U.S. Anti-Doping Agency]," McMahon said. "At that point in time, that should have been a significant indicator to go see a specialist, (and) to go see someone whose core competency was this.

"So I think that's another area where Nate and our team have to take responsibility."

So it sounds like this is far from a malicious act. Now will that be enough for Marquardt to gain forgiveness from the UFC? Only time will tell.

Silva calls for first round KO, Leben admits he?s a ?little scared?

Who's looking for some fine grappling when Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva lock horns? That's what I thought. Two of the most prolific bangers in the history of MMA should provide some fireworks next week at UFC 132.

Silva has 23 knockouts in 33 wins while Leben has 13 in 25 victories. Silva says he's on another level.

"I'm faster than him. Who's gonna hit first? I don't see him going past the first round," said Silva (0:38 mark). "I'm going to hit him a couple of times and after that, he's going to go out."

This is a huge fight for Leben (25-7, 11-6 UFC), who allowed Brian Stann to use him as a stepping stone at UFC 125.

"I've had a lot of fights and I should have known better but I think I just got a little comfortable. I was feeling really good after my three fight win streak. I was feeling good and I underestimated Brian Stann a little bit," Leben said during the UFC 132 teleconference.
"I think the biggest thing that got affected actually was my diet. I came in just a little bit too heavy, and I cut too much weight."

Leben's not making the same mistake against the legendary Silva. He actually said Silva's game scares him a bit.

"This time, I'll be honest, I'm excited to fight Wanderlei. And a little scared at the same time too," Leben said. "I think for me that's definitely a very motivating and driving emotion. I'm really focusing a lot harder on my diet, and when I'm in the gym, I'm in the gym 110 percent. I'm listening to my coaches and I'm putting everything in because I want to go out and I want to win this fight."

It's also a huge fight for Silva, who at 34, appears to be on the downside. He dropped to middleweight to make a run at Anderson Silva's title and hasn't been able to remain healthy. He beat Michael Bisping in his official 185-pound debut, but hasn't fought since in 16 months.

Yamaha Cancels 1000cc Roll Out At Mugello, No Factory Bikes At Monday Test

The Monday test after Mugello was one of the most anticipated occasions in recent memory. For that was to be the first time that the media - and therefore vicariously, the fans - would get a chance to see all three of the factory MotoGP bikes due to be raced next season. Most of the shine has now come off that test, though: After Ducati and Honda let it slip that they would not be testing their 2012 machines at Mugello a week on Monday, today, Yamaha announced that they, too, had decided against taking their 1000cc M1 on track at the test. Instead, Yamaha will wait until the post-race test at Brno in mid-August before putting factory riders Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo on the machine.

Rumor: BMW K1600R Six-Cylinder Naked Bike in the Works

We haven’t seen a good solid stirring of the motorcycle rumormill in a while, but today whispers of a BMW six-cylinder naked bike, a K1600R if you will, have be filtering through the web forums and into our ears. With the rumors centering mostly around the fact that BMW introduced its 1,600cc inline-six motor at EICMA in 2009 by sticking it in a very attractive street-naked motorcycle, speculation has begun as to whether the Bavarian ...

2011 Assen MotoGP Post Race Round Up: It's That Man Again

Saturday's MotoGP race was either a real snoozer or a fantastic spectacle, depending on your point of view. For the racing purist, the kind of fan who appreciates seeing masterful riding, watching someone push the bike to the limit constantly and precisely for full race distance, there was plenty to marvel at. For the casual fan, someone who wants to watch several riders giving it their all in a close battle right to the end, it was dull as ditch water, the first-lap crash giving ultimate winner Ben Spies a gap that he could exploit, and one more pass for the podium positions on lap two settling the race.

UFC on Versus 4 weigh-in: Fighters dropping down all look good

The scale doesn't lie, so often times how you look on weigh-in day can be a huge indicator of how fight night will go down. Five fighters on the UFC on Versus 4 card are dropping down to a new weight class and they all looked healthy on the scale in Pittsburgh. A sixth was expected to weigh-in, but Nate Marquardt was dumped from the card for failing his medicals and subsequently fired from the promotion.

Two former UFC lightweight contenders were really worth monitoring on the scale (full weigh-in video).

Both Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson, dropping 10 pounds to 145, looked good. Neither looked drawn in the face or sickly from a physique standpoint. Stevenson simply lost some mass on his upper body and Griffin was shredded around the waist. Rich Attonito, coming down from middleweight, looked good as well at welterweight. And featherweight absolutely looked like the correct move for Ricardo Lamas and Matt Grice.

The heavyweight staredowns were intense. Matt Mitrione had words for Christian Morecraft, who actually appeared a little thrown off by the exchange.

Cheick Kongo got right in the grill of Pat Barry. The Kongo-Barry fight is now the main event. Charlie Brenneman stepped up to fight Rick Story, the original opponent of Nate Marquardt. Brenneman and TUF 12 runner-up Michael Johnson both played to the Pittsburgh crowd. Brenneman wore a Steelers' hard hat and Johnson weigh-in with a "Terrible Towel" on his head.

Another KO of the Year candidate! Barry won’t blame the referee

Going for the kill can be a double-edged sword. Pat Barry found that out last night against Cheick Kongo. The Frenchman in absolute survival mode landed a right hook and a right uppercut to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Kongo left Barry on the ground with the dreaded stink eye.

Referee Dan Miragliotta was all over both fighters and came close to stopping the fight on at least one occasion, but Kongo kept moving and scrambling.

During the postfight press conference, Barry wouldn't blame Miragliotta..

"I can almost recall Dan Miragliotta's leg almost touching my arm, he was so close," Barry said during the UFC on versus 4 postfight press conference. "So for a split second, a split second I thought 'this is it.' The way he was falling around. I've seen fights get stopped before. This looks like a fight that would get stopped. [...] That didn't cause me to stop."

Give Miragliotta credit, he let the fighters decide the ultimate outcome.

How badly was Barry knocked out? When he "woke up," Barry thought he'd won.

"I've never been knocked out before, so this is a weird feeling man to lose two minutes of your life. Honestly, when I was laying on my back and (coach) Marty Morgan was standing over me, the first thing that came out of my mouth was, 'Yo man, I killed him!' So I thought I had won the fight," Barry told Sherdog. "I don't remember nothing. I remember the entire fight up until I got punched."

It was also a no-brainer for Knockout of the Night. Kongo banked an extra $50,000 for his efforts. This has been an amazing year for sick knockouts.

Tito’s career is on the line, who’s giving him a shot against Bader?

The chips are stacked against Tito Ortiz. Last week, the 36-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champ revealed that he had to beg Zuffa management for one more shot after his loss to Matt Hamill at UFC 121 in October.

The UFC relented but didn't give him an easy mark. Up next is 28-year-old, top 10 light heavyweight Ryan Bader. Essentially a younger, more complete version of Tito.

On this week's MMA Insiders show, HDNet analyst Frank Trigg and Yahoo! Sports' Kevin joined ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to talk about Ortiz's chances in the fight and what he'll do if he loses.

Noons commits to difficult cut, reluctantly visits a salon

Strikeforce in Dallas this weekend is highlighted by the heavyweight battles but one of the sleeper fights is KJ Noons and Jorge Masvidal.

This inside video look at Noons shows the lightweight contender taking care of a crucial prefight task. He checks in with the stylist. Apparently, Noons wiping away his bangs against Nick Diaz annoyed the hell out of the fighter's trainers (1:40 mark).

The Noons' video series is well made and this one provides a bonus with an appearance by the fighter's wife, Melany Lorenzo. Lorenzo is also an athlete having logged time in the Lingerie Football League.

Noons' could be fighting for a shot at Strikeforce 155-pound champion Gilbert Melendez. Does he have a chance against Melendez? Of course. Noons' boxing is as good as anyone's in the business. He's faced Diaz twice. Noons is a true lightweight, who finished Diaz on one occasion and also went the distance with the welterweight champ last year.

The first task at hand though is Masvidal, a well-rounded fighter, who may be able to slow Noons' striking game by getting the fight to the floor. Noons is listed as a minus-320 favorite. With Gina Carano dropping off the card, Noons-Masvidal is now part of the Showtime telecast (10 p.m. ET/PT).

Check out Part 1 and Part 2.
