Coker video: Is Overeem ever fighting again for Strikeforce?

This is a bizarre position for Scott Coker. The Strikeforce CEO is technically under the umbrella of Zuffa. In a recent interview with SI.com, Dana White swore up and down that he has absolutely no hand in decisions with Strikeforce. Yet when you watch or listen to Coker talking about the future of his fighters and future cards, there seems to be a hesitance about answering questions. That could be the nature of the business or he simply can't promise anything because its out of his hands.

Coker did a 12-minute interview with AOL.com and had some interesting takes on what comes down the road for Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko. A small part of the convo revolved around Alistair Overeem and his future with Strikeforce.

"I mean that's something we're going to sit down with his manager Bas [Boon] and have a conversation about," said Coker (8:00 mark).

That's not a yes or a no, but it seemed pretty curt. White recently said Overeem is definitely sticking around so it was odd for Coker to ride the fence on the question.

Coker also explained that Overeem sort of forced the bold move in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix. When the Strikeforce heavyweight champ and tourney favorite said he was out for a fight on Sept. 10, Strikeforce had no choice but to replace him.

"We've been very good to Alistair. We've been very patient. It just didn't work out," Coker said. "If we could've took this fight to October or November we definitely would've done it."

Coker said between the busy UFC schedule, Showtime's boxing slate, the Floyd Mayweather fight in November and MLB's World Series, there weren't many dates that made sense.

On other matters, Coker said Fedor vs. Hendo is not a make or break fight for either fighter's future with Strikeforce. Even with a Henderson loss, he definitely wants to keep Henderson around. He's jazzed about Marloes Coenen vs. Miesha Tate being the first female title fight under the Zuffa banner. Coenen was a no-show at the Thursday press conference. Coker joked that he had no idea what happened calling it a "makeup issue or breakfast issue or wardrobe malfunction."

Brain study could help fighters decide when to retire

It's decision time for Wanderlei Silva. It's the same dilemma Chuck Liddell struggled with in 2010 and guys like Jens Pulver and Ken Shamrock are still battling. When do you retire from active fighting?

Stand-up sluggers take a lot of shots to the head and no one wants to see a fighter with eroding motor skills in his 40s or 50s.

In a story with the same headline, the Las Vegas Review-Journal shines a light on a brain study that could help fighters decide when to retire.

Changes in brain volume, scarring and blood flow will be measured through brain scans. Changes seen on a participant's MRI will be correlated with their performance on cognitive assessments and neurologic exams. When fighters show a correlation between MRI findings and cognitive decline, researchers hope to determine whether there is a relationship to a number of factors, including knockouts, number of rounds fought and number of blows suffered.

"It's important to know the true brain health impact that boxing and other combative sports have on fighters," said Dr. Michael Modic, chairman of the Neurological Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. "We hope to find a way to identify fighters with repetitive injuries to be able to knowledgeably tell fighters when to hang up the gloves and help them heal."

The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is looking for 650 fighters from the boxing and MMA to volunteer for the study. Over a four-year period, fighters would have their brains monitored to judge trauma. The study is part of a $400 million grant from the Lincy Foundation, backed by gambling magnate Kirk Kerkorian.

Study participants will undergo four annual MRI brain scans, along with cognitive and speech tests and physical exams to monitor how brain activity can be changed by head trauma in the ring.

The information could also help commissions around the country on issues of licensing. Silva, 35, has lost six of eight fights and suffered nasty KOs in four of those losses. He also took a ton of shots to head in his loss to Liddell. Commissions have never really turned down aging fighters. Maybe they'll have more ammo in the future to protect the fighters from themselves.

Rosholt fighting his way back to UFC at Shark Fights 17? Rodriguez off and then back on card

Because of the high injury rate in mixed martial arts, the UFC is always looking for reinforcements. Jake Rosholt wants to be one of those guys.

The former NCAA Div. I wrestling champ at Oklahoma State was released by the promotion in 2010. Tonight, he takes on veteran Matt Horwich. Rosholt is 4-1 with a no contest since his departure, but that loss came against Horwich.

"[I take] nothing away from Horwich; he whipped my ass last time," Rosholt recently told MMAjunkie. "But it's going to be a completely different fight. I'm going in with a different mindset, just a different swagger, and I got a lot of confidence right now. I'm fighting good, and it's going to take a hell of a man to stop me."

Rosholt (11-3, 1 NC, 1-2 UFC) wants back in with the major leagues.

"I don't see why not (if) I go out there and put on a good performance," he said. "This would be like six wins in a row against a tough guy ? a guy that's beat me before ? so it's the first hurdle that I've had to jump in my career. It'll be a great test for me and damn sure a big stepping stone to get myself back in the UFC."

The card in Frisco, Tx. airing tonight on HDNet (9 p.m. ET) also includes former UFC heavyweight champ Ricco Rodriguez. This news comes after a wacky 24 hours where Rodriguez pulled out of his original bout. Rodriguez was booked for a 230-pound catchweight fight. The slimmed down Rodriguez, weighing just 227 pounds, watched his opponent come in at 253. Shark Fights found a late replacement in Doug Williams.

Daley says his wrestling deficiency is overplayed

On Saturday night, the last thing Paul Daley wants to be doing is stare at the arena ceiling for much his fight against Tyron Woodley. In the past, he hasn't much say where the fight goes against a former college wrestler like Woodley. Daley and his wrestling Kenny Johnson say his Strikeforce bout this weekend will be different.

Johnson, a former Olympian who wrestled at Iowa, has increased his time spent with the British slugger.

"We started picking up the pace in the last few years and his wrestling has gone through the roof," Johnson said (3:50 mark). "He's really dedicated a lot of time and tried to become a mixed martial artist."

Fight fans' last memory of Daley against an elite former college wrestler was Josh Koscheck at UFC 113. Daley was taken down at will and smothered for 15 minutes. The Brit says forget that fight, Woodley isn't in Koscheck's league.

"He's not as big as Josh Koscheck. He is as athletic, but on the technical side, I don't think he can compete with Josh Koscheck," Daley told USA Today. "People are comparing this to that. People do forget in the Koscheck fight, there are takedowns that I stopped. I think that Josh Koscheck is a higher level than Tyron Woodley, so even if I'm able to stop two of his takedowns or stuff them or stall two of his takedowns back then, I think Tyron Woodley's going to have a very difficult time taking me down when I'm on form, when I'm 100%."

Daley (27-10-2) is fully dedicated to shoring up his weaknesses.

"He (Johnson) lives at my house. He eats with me. So if we're not training, we're talking about wrestling; we're looking at footage. So I think people are going to be very shocked, and I think that's an area where Tyron Woodley is underestimating me, and I think that's going to work in my benefit," said Daley.

The biggest question mark for Woodley (8-0) is his experience. He's never been in the cage with someone so seasoned.

"I'm much bigger. I'm much stronger than he thinks. I'm a lot more experienced than him. I don't think he realizes how that's going to play out in this fight," said Daley.

When talking about future opponents, Daley dropped an interesting nugget during this interview.

"There's a mystery guy. There's a mystery guy that's been signed by Strikeforce that Scott Coker's mentioned, and he said that the winner of this fight could possibly be fighting him immediately for the title. There's lots of speculation; I really have no clue, but I want to be back in a position of fighting for a title," said Daley.

Who could it be?

Curran and Sandro favorites at tonight?s Bellator 47

Bellator has done a heckuva collecting some top-notch featherweight fighters. While the UFC is struggling to find some depth beyond Jose Aldo, Bellator has an open race between 5-7 fighters for top spot in its 145-pound division.

Tonight on MTV2 (9 p.m. ET/PT) we get some more answers as Pat Curran faces Ronnie Mann and Marlon Sandro battles Nazareno Malegarie in Bellator Season 5 Featherweight tournament in Rama, Canada.. The winner of the tournament will eventually get a shot at Bellator champ Joe Warren.

Sandro, riding a streak of 4-of-5 win in Japan, was the pre-tournament favorite. Sandro (18-2) got fans in a lather with his performances at Sengoku 11, 12 and 13 where he scored three straight knockouts in a combined three minutes and 20 seconds. But Curran's success at lightweight (wins over Toby Imada and Roger Huerta, plus a close loss to Eddie Alvarez) and a dominant win in the first round over Luis Palomino might make him the favorite. Before we get to see a Sandro-Curran final, they have to get by some tough hombres in Canada.

Sandro is a big favorite at minus-260 over the once-beaten Malegarie while Curran is a slight choice over Mann at minus-130.

Bellator 47 weigh-in:

Pat Curran (146) vs. Ronnie Mann (144.8) - Featherweight
Marlon Sandro (145.6) vs. Nazareno Malegarie (145.6) - Featherweight
Neil Grove (264.4) vs. Zak Jensen (263.4) - Heavyweight
Chris Horodecki (155.4) vs. Chris Saunders (155.4) - Lightweight

MMA Marketplace: Hendo vs. Fedor ? the shirts!

Time to break down the most important part of this weekend's face-off between Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson: the walkout shirts!

Both fighters are sponsored by Clinch Gear, the clothing company owned by Dan Henderson. That means Henderson is sponsoring his opponent. Fedor should keep that in mind -- don't let Hendo break his hand. He still needs to sign checks.

Fedor's shirt looks like they took a perfectly nice design with a cool crest and then just spray painted some letters over it. Unless it's an homage to graffiti art, it's a little odd. Buy his shirt for $32.95.

Henderson's shirt plays up the America vs. Russia angle, using stars and stripes to make up Henderson's nickname and adding a "Made in America" tag. I'd much rather wear this shirt on Fourth of July than some of these American flag abominations. Buy it for $32.95.

Tito wrecks his Rolls and cries; UFC breathes sigh of relief

It's a good thing Tito Ortiz is rich and likes to drive a $300,000 tank. The main eventer at UFC 133 got into a minor fender bender in Costa Mesa, Calif.

According to TMZ.com, Ortiz was involved in a three-car accident in his Rolls Royce. The former UFC light heavyweight champ got emotional over his smashed grill.

[Ortiz said,] "I cried a little because it's my favorite car but it will be new in no time."

Ortiz was a late fill-in at UFC 133. After Lyoto Machida asked for a bigger payday, Ortiz was seemingly the only remaining high-profile option to face Rashad Evans. Ortiz is safe and the UFC caught a huge break when he came away from this accident unscathed.

Culinary union blocking MMA?s efforts in N.Y.: Fertitta says union is hurting its own members

MMA's legalization in New York is on hold again. A bill that would've approved the sport passed again in the state senate, but stalled in the assembly. UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta has worked for years to change the attitudes in the Empire State, but there's a force outside of the legislators that he says is holding up the entire process, the Culinary Union.

"Unfortunately in life and in politics things aren't always what they seem on the surface. It's not about MMA. It's about the fact that the Culinary Union is obviously very strong in New York. They have a strong political base there. They have been there forever and they are holding this bill up," Fertitta told "The MMA Insiders" on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas.

Fertitta and his brother Frank also own Station Casinos which is one of the two largest non-union employers in the gaming industry. Fertitta said the economic impact that New York is missing out on each time the UFC would come to the state is staggering. He said when the promotion held UFC 129 in Toronto it pumped $45 million into the city's economy.

"The fact that [the Culinary Union] opposing this, at the end of the day, they're only hurting their own members which really doesn't make any sense," said Fertitta.

Fertitta says the votes are there to legalize MMA in N.Y. and residents are surprised when told why it hasn't already happened.

"Whenever I talk to or get in front of people who are residents of the state of New York, and you tell them what's going on, they're appalled. They're flabbergasted," Fertitta said. "It's just crazy that the Culinary Union would have enough political power to basically keep the democratic process from playing out."

UFC president Dana White is a little more blunt in expressing his feelings about the work of the union.

2011 Laguna Seca MotoGP Sunday Round Up - That's Racing

The race at Laguna Seca underlines the lessons from the last race at the Sachsenring. There are currently three riders in this championship who are head and shoulders above the rest (there should be four, but the fourth one is currently handicapped by his machinery, more of which later), with virtually nothing to choose between them. Minor setup tweaks and injuries make the difference between first and third place, and the racing has been pretty good because of it.

The Sachsenring was a genuine thriller, which Laguna Seca would have had a hard time living up to, but it still threw up a pretty interesting race. Spectacular? Perhaps not, but tense, close, and balanced on a knife edge until five laps from the end. The final gaps between Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa were huge, but less than a second had covered the threesome for the first half of the race, and the gap between Stoner and Lorenzo only grew once Stoner got past the Spaniard.

Rosholt moves one step closer to UFC return with win over Horwich

It's never easy against Matt Horwich, but if you fight smart and stay out his guard, you can get a win. Jake Rosholt didn't thrill the crowd in Frisco, Tx., but he stuck to his gameplan and took out the veteran to improve to 5-1 away from UFC in the main event of Shark Fights 17.

Rosholt (12-3, 1 NC) got a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all cards. He mixed takedowns with some solid body work on the feet. The former three-time NCAA Div. 1 national champion wrestler at Oklahoma State scored five takedowns in all, but never went to the ground with Horwich, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt fighting under Eddie Bravo.

"I'm just glad to get out here and get a win against him. It was a scrap. I knew it would be 15 minutes of scrapping," Rosholt told HDNet's Ron Kruck. "I was going to land some strikes, land some to his body and wear him out a little bit. I don't see very many people end Matt Horwich .

Following a loss against Kendall Grove at UFC 106, Rosholt was dropped by the UFC. He's only been a pro in MMA since July of 2007. He entered the WEC as a green fighter and got just one fight with Zuffa's smaller promotion before it phased out the middleweight division. Rosholt was probably thrown to the wolves a little too early in UFC. He went 1-2 with a win over Chris Leben and losses to Grove and Dan Miller. Clearly, his goal is to get back to the UFC.

"I just want to keep fighting and keep getting better all the time. Sooner or later I'll get there. That's where I deserve to be. That's where the best fighters are. That's where I want to fight," said Rosholt.

The takedowns always score with the judges and Horwich stayed on his back too long. On the feet, Horwich's charging flurries confused Rosholt a bit in the first, but it was the wrestler who did more damage in the long run. In the final round, he tried an unorthodox flying knee that missed, but followed it up with a left hook that opened a cut over Horwich's right eye. Horwich also had significant swelling under the eye by the end of the fight.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez was also on the card. He ran through a very overmatched Doug Williams and won via rear-naked choke at 2:16 of the first round. Williams (5-13-1) was a late replacement after a wacky weigh-in day where Rodriguez's original opponent missed the catchweight by 23 pounds. This is a career rebirth for Rodriguez (47-11), who's fighting back from a well-publicized battle against drug addiction. The UFC champ back in 2002 ballooned to 300-plus pounds. Last night, he was 227 pounds and still looks like he should eventually fight down at 205 with some more conditioning work. Rodriguez's previous two fights were at a 215-pound catchweight.

The most dramatic moment of the night came when Alan Jouban crushed and finished Andrew Goldthwaite with a left hook (3:25 mark).

Openly gay Carmouche fighting for plenty of causes this weekend

Liz Carmouche is like most people who fear something they're unfamiliar with; the former Marine hated MMA when she first saw it. Once she learned about the sport and began training, she quickly gained an understanding. Carmouche (on the left) would probably like to see people be as open-minded when it comes to someone's sexual preference.

According to Ben Fowlkes from MMAFighting, Carmouche will be the first openly gay fighter to fight under the Zuffa banner when she steps into the cage on Friday at Strikeforce Challengers 17. Carmouche faces a former champion in Sarah Kaufman (Showtime 11 p.m. ET/PT)

After years of having to hide her identity while an active Marine, Carmouche feels liberated. Said Carmouche:

"It was really difficult. I wouldn't say I came out so much as I came into my own. I really discovered what my sexuality meant to me and what that meant to me as a person. I was able to come out to my family, but other than that I couldn't come out to co-workers or to friends because of what that would mean for my military life and my career. That made my life difficult, because I felt like I was constantly conflicted and at war with myself every day that I faced people."

Carmouche's sexual preference flew under the radar in MMA, but she knows that wouldn't be the case if a male fighter announced he was gay.

"When [men] look at two women, it's 'lesbian action,'" she said. "That's attractive to them. Two men doesn't have that same appeal to them. Two women is just much more appealing to them, because they find it attractive."

Carmouche first felt acceptance in the gym.

"It's pretty funny, because it was obvious to all of us [that she was gay], I think," chuckled Carmouche's coach,Manny Hernandez. [...]

"At our school we look at it like, she's an athlete," Hernandez said. "She can definitely [expletive] you up. That is something that happens. There are male fighters in the lighter weight classes who will high-tail it out of here, because they didn't sign up to get beat up by a chick. But it happens."

Carmouche (5-1) has been successful in carrying those beatings over to the Strikeforce cage. Back in March, she shocked many by pounding Strikeforce's 135-pound champion Marloes Coenen for three-plus rounds before making a silly mistake and getting caught in a triangle choke. Keep in mind, Carmouche accepted the fight on 10 days notice and has only been a pro since last May. Coenen's been a pro since 2000.

Against Kaufman on Friday, Carmouche gets a chanceto prove the Coenen fight wasn't a flukeand more importantly break some new barriers.

Marquardt not heading to Bellator as he fights off criticism from B.J. Penn

Apparently the "Nate Marquardt's a nice guy" stuff is long gone. The former UFC middleweight contender, who had run ins with both Pennsylvania and New Jersey over his testosterone replacement therapy use, is getting battered from all sides. Bellator's Hector Lombard called him a cheater earlier this week and now B.J. Penn has jumped on board the "Slam Nate Express."

@BJPenndontcom and @NathanMarquardt engaged in a little Twitter throw down yesterday.

MMA fans on Twitter are choosing sides. A newly combative Marquardt is getting blasted by some followers and spoke with MMAjunkie to defend himself.

"Some of the fighters that think they're so cool and tough by kicking a guy when he's down ? as far as my career, this has been one of the worst times of my life, and these guys are calling me a cheater and talking crap ? I've taken note as to who those guys are, and I'm going to come for them. Eventually, I'll get them. I don't care if it's in a superfight or if they want to come down to my gym. I'll beat them up for free," Marquardt said.

"I think you know who these guys are ? Ben Askren, B.J. Penn, Paul Daley, Hector Lombard, cowards talking crap about a guy when he's in such a situation. They're trying to take advantage of the situation. They're bullies. Those are the guys I want to beat up."

Not everyone is slamming Marquardt. Others on Twitter have started a #bringnateback hash tag. They're including UFC president Dana White on many of those tweets.

Marquardt and his management team must be banking on White eventually softening his stance. Bellator made an offer to Marquardt, but the two sides couldn't come to terms. It sounds like Marquardt wanted an immediate title shot against Lombard, but Bellator wouldn't back off it's standard tournament format. All new fighters are usually put into a tournament and have to earn a title shot against the reigning champ.

"The reality is that it's not often that a top-10 guy is available... especially when he's coming off a win. Nate's situation was pretty unique. It's an anomaly for a guy like that to become available, so we had discussions. But it just became pretty clear it wasn't the right fit," Rebney told MMAjunkie.

Who's making the mistake in that case? Wouldn't it benefit Bellator to steal away a high profile fighter? Or is it Marquardt, for not taking the only major opportunity that may come his way?

The more you climb, the better you?ll climb

I have had a few days away from climbing - in fact, my last session was 3 weekends ago at Froggatt - and so I got back to the gym this week. My local gym has an auto-belay setup so I was able to do some indoor routes without company.
And I struggled! Struggled to get [...]

Bouldering Burbage photos

Finally a little sun! Yesterday I went climbing in Burbage (specifically Burbage south boulders) in the Peak District near Sheffield. I’m really glad I’ve got these boulders within 15 minutes of my home.
Although in a climbing wall / gym I’m happy on 6a/6b the techniques on grit boulders are a different world: lots of smearing [...]

Don?t pick against Jackson: Couture called a ?fake [expletive] has-been? for doing so

There are two Quinton Jacksons. The boisterous, cocky "Rampage" who showed up at the UFC 135 press conference on Tuesday in Denver and hypersensitive, delicate Jackson who lashes out like a youngster if he's criticized or called on the carpet.

We saw a great example of that when he threatened to quit MMA in late 2009 claiming he was being mistreated and used by the UFC. That came roughly 14 months after UFC management bailed him out and stuck with him after a bizarre driving rampage in Southern California.

This week, in between dropping some epic trash talk on young Jon Jones, Jackson flipped out on Randy Couture. What did Couture do? The retired UFC legend had the nerve to pick against Jackson in his last fight!

A Twitter war unfolded between the 33-year-old Jackson and Couture, 48.

Here's the video where Couture hurt Jackson's feelings:

Jackson wore Xtreme Couture/Affliction gear during his walkout at UFC 114x in May of 2010. It sounds like he's suggesting Couture's "anti-Jackson" picks are motivated by Rampage changing apparel providers.

2011 Laguna Seca MotoGP FP1 Result: Stoner Holds Off Pedrosa And Lorenzo

Casey Stoner has topped the first session of free practice at Laguna Seca, getting up to speed early and setting a steady pace around the 1'22.3 bracket. Stoner's Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa ended in 2nd, and just a tenth of a second slower than Stoner, despite a low-speed tip over after running on at the Andretti Hairpin. Pedrosa just edged ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, the Yamaha rider twelve hundredths behind the Australian.

Ben Spies set the 4th fastest time, but was half a second off the pace of Stoner, while Andrea Dovizioso ended up in 5th, a tenth behind Spies. Marco Simoncelli was the last rider to get within a second of Stoner, just over nine tenths off the time of the Repsol Honda man.

Nicky Hayden was the fastest Ducati, the two-time winner at the track quick round here. Hayden ran a back-to-back test on the GP11 and the new GP11.1, as currently being used by his teammate Valentino Rossi. Hayden set his best time on the GP11 in the first run, but spent the rest of the session on the GP11.1, making solid progress on the bike. Meanwhile, Valentino Rossi spent the entire session on the GP11.1, the plan to try the GP11 against the GP11.1 seemingly shelved for the moment. Rossi ended the session in 9th, behind both Colin Edwards in 8th and Hayden in 7th. Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top 10 on the Rizla Suzuki.
