UFC 134 picks, Vegas style: Okami is a huge underdog

The UFC stocked its Rio de Janeiro card with lots of Brazilian fighters, but according to the sports books and bettors that doesn't mean there's a ton of tight match ups at the top of card.

Yushin Okami is in the main event against Anderson Silva. He's got a 2006 win via disqualification over Silva, but he's still a massive underdog against the UFC middleweight champ.

This is also a big swing fight amongst sports books in Las Vegas and off-shore. Make sure you shop the odds. Some books have Silva as high as minus-625 and others have him at minus-450.

Okami is certainly intriguing as an underdog. The question is whether the Japanese grappling specialist can get the fight to the ground. Larry Pepe (ProMMARadio.com) and Damon Martin (MMAWeekly.com) on RawVegas.tv don't have a ton of confidence in the challenger.

UFC 134 betting odds (Courtesy Palazzo Sports Book Las Vegas):

Yushin Okami (+375) vs. Anderson Silva (-550) - UFC middleweight title

Forrest Griffin (+180) vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (-220) - Light heavyweight

Antonio "Rodrigo" Nogueira (+190) vs. Brendan Schaub (-240) - Heavyweight

Ross Pearson (+220) vs. Edson Barboza (-300) - Lightweight

Stanislav Nedkov (+170) vs. Luiz Cane (-200) - Light heavyweight

Spencer Fisher (+170) vs. Thiago Tavares (-200) - Lightweight

Dan Miller (+200) vs. Rousimar Palhares (-250) - Middleweight

David Mitchell (+300) vs. Paulo Thiago (-400) - Welterweight

Luis Ramos (+220) vs. Erick Silva (-300) - Welterweight

Yves Jabouin (+150) vs. Ian Loveland (-180) -Bantamweight

Felipe Arantes (+300) vs. Yuri Alcantara (-400) - Featherweight

Johnny Eduardo (+140) vs. Raphael Assuncao (-170) - Featherweight

Tavares hooks Fisher with a TKO at UFC 134

Thiago Tavares continued the Brazilian win streak going at UFC 134 with a TKO of Spencer Fisher in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night.

Tavares worked Fisher against the cage for most of the first round, controlling Fisher and keeping him from landing any significant strikes. Tavares followed the same gameplan in the second round, but was more aggressive. He was able to take Fisher's back, and then transition to full mount. He let strikes rain down on Fisher's head until the bout was stopped 2:51 into the second round.

Afterwards, he jumped on the fence and waved a Brazilian flag as the raucous crowd chanted, "Thiago!" It was clearly a special moment for the fighter born and raised in Brazil.

Jack Shields passes away, son Jake facing tough decision with UFN 25 in less than three weeks

A rough month for the mixed martial arts world just witnessed another sad passing. Jake Shields' father Jack passed away on Monday.

"lost my father manager and one of my best friends today!! R.I.P jack you will be greatly missed and loved by many" ? Jake Shields

Jack was a huge part of Jake's rise over the years. At age 23, the fighter was on the verge of breaking through, but a lack of solid management was holding him back. His father had a little experience working in the music promotion business so he offered to help out.

"Jake asked me to manage him after that and I said, 'I'm sure there's someone down there who knows the business a lot better than I do. I'm all the way up here in the mountains. There's got to be someone closer to you who knows this business,'" Shields told AOL.com back in April. "Six to eight months later he sent me a contract that somebody wanted him to sign and then I took over. It was terrible. I had to [delete] the whole thing and write a new one."

The younger Shields has always been one of the more polite, grounded fighters in the game. It's clear he got that from his father. Jack said being around his son also made him a better person.

"Jake is somebody who fights cool. Before the fight he stays relaxed and he'll be back there joking. I've been back there with other people ? I'm not going to name them, but friends of ours who fight ? and some of them work themselves up to get mad and angry before they go fight. Jake doesn't do that. He's totally relaxed and totally confident. That relaxed confidence tends to wash over me, and I usually go into the fights relaxed and confident as well," said Jack.

In a pivotal welterweight title, Jake is scheduled fight Jake Ellenberger on Sept. 17 in New Orleans at Ultimate Fight Night 25.

Brazilian crowd set a high bar for every UFC crowd hereafter

In most post-fight press conferences, UFC president Dana White compliments the crowd and the city that they've just visited. It's a smart business move to lavish praise on every city the UFC visits, whether they have packed the place or not. Even if the UFC never returns, White does want that city's inhabitants to continue watching fights.

But when he called the crowd in Rio de Janeiro the best crowd he's ever been around, it was not empty rhetoric. Even through my television, it was clear that the fans in Brazil would make UFC 134 unlike any event the UFC has ever produced.

It started with the very first fight. Usually, the preliminary fights take place in a half-filled stadium, with only the fighters' loved ones truly invested in the bout. There were no Brazilians in the opening bout, but the crowd still went nuts for Ian Loveland vs. Yves Jabouin. They even chanted the name of a popular soccer player who happened to be black, like Jabouin.

The chanting never stopped. Yahoo! Sports Brazil's Fernando Zanchetta gave us insight on some of the chants that popped up over the course of the evening, which spanned from the beautiful to the profane.

The chants included, "I am Brazilian, with great pride, with love" (sou brasileiro, com muito orgulho, com muito amor) which really makes "U-S-A, U-S-A" pale in comparison. Next, was, "Uh, will die, uh, gonna die!" Zanchetta said that this is used to frighten foreigners. Finally, they had a special one for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's win. "Ih, [expletive that rhymes with ducked]... Minotauro appeared'(ih, fodeu... Minotauro apareceu)."

Paulo Thiago's appearance also set the crowd into a frenzy, and deservedly so. In addition to being a fighter, Thiago is a member of BOPE, Brazil's version of special forces. Much as Tim Kennedy and Brian Stann are cheered in the U.S. for serving the country, Thiago is revered there. The crowd chanted "skull" in Portugese, which is BOPE's symbol.

But the crowd hit their apex during the main card, when three Brazilian stars won with KOs. Nogueira's win put them into a beer-throwing frenzy that continued with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Anderson Silva's wins.

What should U.S. crowds learn from this? We can step it up a notch. Chants, cheers, arena-shaking yells -- let's learn from our Brazilian friends. Everything except the beer-throwing. There's no good reason in the world to waste a perfectly good beer.

Nogueira hopes to answer the critics in his comeback fight

It seems like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira went from contender to card filler overnight. That really hasn't been the case, but for many there's a lot of doubt over what the PRIDE fighting legend has left in the tank.

"Big Nog" is only 35 years old, but he's battled injuries over the last three years and gone just 1-2. Now he's facing one of the UFC's young lions in Brendan Schaub. It's been a long battle against knee and hip injuries.

"Besides my physical and technical performance, I have the will to do anything. See four months ago, I couldn't walk. I recovered for several months to take this challenge to fight at UFC Rio," said Nogueira.

Nogueira said his rapid return was made possible by his high level training partners like Junior dos Santos, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Rafael Cavalcante and Antonio "Big Foot" Silva.

Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe joined Cagewriter to break down Big Nog's chances against Schaub.

You tell us: Guida or a title shot for Ben Henderson?

Ben Henderson's dominating win over Jim Miller gave the UFC a conundrum. With a win, Miller was expected to take on the winner of Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar's October title bout. Henderson threw a gigantic wrench in those plans.

Now, what to do with Henderson? Though he was non-committal immediately after his fight, Henderson has since said he is open to either a title shot or a bout with Clay Guida, who has been on an impressive run since losing to Kenny Florian late in 2009.

Clay Guida for the Battle of Crazy Hair and a title shot: Henderson's one recent loss is to Anthony Pettis, a fighter that Guida beat in June. Guida has four wins in a row, with three ending in submissions. With both Guida and Henderson coming off big wins, it would make the most sense to match them up, with the winner getting a shot at the UFC lightweight title.

Give 'Smooth' the title shot now: The beating he gave Miller (who was on a seven-fight win streak), the win over Mark Bocek (in Henderson's UFC debut), and the close (until the Showtime kick) loss to Anthony Pettis mean that Henderson is ready for a title shot. He has been in title fights before and has delivered. Give him a chance to show that readiness in the UFC.

Now, it's your turn to try some UFC matchmaking. What would you do with Henderson?

Former trainer to Randy Couture and Vitor Belfort, Shawn Tompkins passes away at 37

The UFC put on one of its most exciting fight cards of the year with UFC on Versus 5 tonight in Milwaukee, but the event was overshadowed by the sad news that renowned mixed martial arts trainer Shawn Tompkins passed away earlier on Sunday. Tompkins was just 37.

Multiple fighters confirmed the passing and the UFC made an announcement concerning Tompkins' death during the live show on Versus.

The reaction from fighters has slowly begun to trickle out:

MMA fighter John Gunderson today told MMAjunkie.com that Tompkins "didn't wake up," but he was still unclear on the details surrounding his passing.

A native of Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada, Tompkins spent many of his recent years in Las Vegas as the head coach at Xtreme Couture. He worked with former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture. In recent years, Tompkins also worked the corner of fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Forrest Griffin and Vitor Belfort.

In 2009, Tompkins left Xtreme Couture to move his team just a few miles away in Las Vegas to the TapouT Training Center. He was currently working with UFC fighters Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki and Sam Stout. Tompkins was married to Stout's sister Emilie.

Nice guys finish fights: Brendan Schaub brings gear to Brazilian kids

Last week, we had to give out a Facepalm of the Week, but this week, Cagewriter can tell you about Brendan Schaub (pictured at right), one of the UFC's up-and-coming heavyweights, being a good guy.

Schaub, a runner-up on "The Ultimate Fighter, is in Brazil to fight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 134. It is the biggest fight of his career, as a win could put Schaub into the mix for title contention, but that didn't keep him from going back to a poor town that he had visited on his last trip to the South American country.

With the help of his sponsors RevGear, Echo Unlimited and Bony Acai, Schaub came back with bags of training gear. On his first visit, he found that the young MMA students were practicing on asphalt with little protection.

"You go there, and these kids have nothing," the heavyweight said today at a pre-event press conference for UFC 134, which takes place Saturday at HSBC Arena in Rio. "Literally, nothing, and they're as happy as can be ... For me, it was a rude awakening. It's stuff I'm not used to in Denver, Colorado ? my little bubble ? so I got all my sponsors together (to collect) donated gear."

The poverty in Brazil is hard to ignore, but someone with a laser focus on a fight easily could have done that. Kudos to Schaub for keeping his eyes open, and then doing what he could to help.

Thanks to MMA Junkie

FOX and UFC announce official partnership; Four UFC fight cards on FOX and 32 live fight nights on FX each year

This was the day Dana White dreamed about from the beginning. The UFC president's brainchild has finally reached a big deal with network television.

Joined by FOX Sports Media Group Chairman David Hill and FOX Sports President Eric Shanks, White along with UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta announced a seven-year agreement between the fight promotion and the television network during a Los Angeles press conference.

Beginning on Nov. 12, FOX will air four major UFC fight cards each year. The UFC's reality show "The Ultimate Fighter" will be moving from Spike to FX. The format will change from a taped show to airing live fights each Friday night.

During the two seasons each year, FX will air every "Ultimate Fighter" fight live. There will also be six UFC Fight Nights each year on FX.

"We will own Friday nights," said Shanks. "There will be 32 total fight nights each year on FX.

Hill credited super agent Ari Emmanuel (the real life Ari Gold from HBO's "Entourage") with pushing the for the UFC on FOX behind the scenes and Fertitta/White convinced him over the years.

"There's no yesterday in TV. TV is about the next big thing. We first started talking 10 years ago. Lorenzo said something then. He said what boxing was to my generation is what UFC will be and is to the next generation," said Hill. "TV can't make a sport. The people have to speak. What Dana, Frank and Lorenzo have done is taken a little niche sport, and in 10 years have made it into a mainstream sport. The key was recognizing what the people wanted. It's the ultimate democratic thing."

Before the press conference, Spike, the home of the first 13 TUFs and the final season this fall, made this statement:

"'The Ultimate Fighter' Season 14 in September will be our last. We are increasing our commitment to distinctive, original series that we own such as "Auction Hunters" and "Bar Rescue" which are delivering on our goal to reach a broader audience," said Spike's VP of Communications David Schwarz. "Our 6-year partnership with the UFC has been incredibly beneficial in building both our brands, and we wish them all the best in the future."

The UFC will also have programming on FUEL. When asked about discussion for a UFC channel Fertitta it might be a little too soon for the fight promotion to run a network.

Fertitta, along with his brother Frank, bought the struggling promotion back in 2001 for just two million dollars. The company struggled through 2005 and was nearly put on the block for sale. Multiple reports claim the new deal with FOX is worth $90 million a year.

UFC reportedly has deal with FOX; Network has big press conference announcement set for Thursday

The rumor merry-go-round continues to twirl with regards to the UFC and a new television deal.

First it was the Wall Street Journal reporting that Zuffa (parent company to the UFC) was closing in on a deal with Comcast/NBC. Now Sport Business Daily says FOX has stepped up to grab the mixed martial arts giant in a package that could be worth as much as $90 million per year.

In what would represent a major push into the mainstream for the UFC, Fox has agreed to a deal that will see the broadcast channel air as many as four MMA events per year, according to several sources. The multiyear deal would mark the first time the UFC will have consistent airtime on a broadcast network. Fox execs refused to comment on the deal, but sources with knowledge of the negotiations said bidding had gone as high as $90M per year. The Fox deal is believed to be for seven or eight years.

UPDATE: John Ourand from SBJ tweeted that FOX has a major announcement on the way later this week.

UFC president Dana White wouldn't confirm the deal to MMAjunkie.

"You guys will know when we have a TV deal," said White.

White appeared with Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole on Friday's "MMA Insiders" on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas.

"We do not have a deal. We're out there talking to everybody. When you're out there talking to everybody there's going to be lots of rumors," White said (19:10 mark). "In a perfect world, what would really work out great is if you could be on CBS and FOX and Comcast/NBC. Just like the NFL is. That would be the perfect world, but this sport has a lot of room to grow."

White has been very selective over the years with the UFC's programming partners.

"I will not do a dumb deal. We're not going to do a deal that doesn't make sense. We could've been the first mixed martial arts on network television, but none of the deals made sense," White said. "And as you saw all those guys [that were on network TV like EliteXC on CBS] ended up going out of business."

The UFC has been looking for a multi-platform deal. The promotion would like programming on network TV and several cable channels. Currently, it's running live fights and additional programming with preview shows and past fights on Spike and Versus. That will change in a deal with FOX.

As part of the deal, most of the weekly programming that UFC has on Versus and Spike TV will move to FX starting in January. That includes several fight cards, plus shows like the reality series "The Ultimate Fighter." Fox-owned Fuel also will wind up with some UFC content. But rumors that Fox will rebrand Fuel as a UFC channel are not true, sources said. Fox was attracted to UFC programming, which has produced some of the highest viewership figures -- and most attractive demos -- on Versus and Spike TV.

According to SBJ, Viacom-owned Spike dropped out of the bidding because of lagging numbers:

The UFC's talks with Viacom-owned Spike ended before that. Sources said Spike ultimately passed over concern that its UFC shoulder programming stopped growing. Shows like "Unleashed," "Knockouts" and "Countdown" averaged 1 million viewers in '05. This year, they are averaging 492,000. Spike holds the rights to UFC library programming through '12, including old fights and shoulder programming such as "UFC Unleashed."

The most recent live event on Versus actually trended up at UFC on Versus 5.

UFC's Sunday night eventin Milwaukee on Versus also drew 766,000 viewers from 9:00-11:09pm ET, marking the net's most-viewed program for the week ending August 14. That figure is up 3% from 744,000 viewers for the last UFC event on Versus on June 26.

?Cowboy? Cerrone shows striking prowess at UFC on Versus 5

MILWAUKEE -- Donald Cerrone showed off his kickboxing prowess in a TKO over Charles Oliveira on Sunday night at the UFC on Versus 5 card.

Cerrone controlled most of the fight, stalking down Oliveira with leg kicks and punches. He knocked Oliveira down with a knee, and then backed away for a second before finishing up with a flurry of punches. It was stopped at 3:01 in the first round.

"My game plan was to let it go man. I finally got to go out there and get it started. Looking forward, I would like a rematch with Ben Henderson. I train with the best every day, and this is what you get," Cerrone said after the win.

This win puts Cerrone on a five-fight win streak, extending back to his stint in the WEC. Oliveira is a young, rising prospect, but has hit a rough patch as his last three fights were two losses and a no contest.

UFC on Fox: How will ?The Ultimate Fighter? change?

Thursday's landmark announcement that the UFC has a new partnership with the Fox network included the news that the UFC's relationship with Spike TV will end after the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter." The revamped show will air on Fox's sister network, FX.

Its home is far from the only change that will be made for the reality show that helped kickstart the UFC's popularity but has grown stale as of late. Instead of featuring a taped, edited show with taped fights, the fights will be shown live. Packages from life in the fighter house and training will be cut from the things that happened during the week leading up to each fight.

Also, fans will have a chance to help decide the fights, as they will get to vote on upcoming match-ups. The coaches will conduct their training camps over the 12-week period of the show alongside their fighters, and fight at the end of the season. Over the course of two seasons in a year, 24 live fights will be aired on Friday nights.

Of course, there are plenty of questions that will need to be answered about how the UFC will run the show. Will the finale still be an event, like it has been for the past seasons, or just be a part of the show? Will the fight-in shows still happen, or will the cast be decided by the time the show starts?

It also will ask much of both the contestants and the coaches. The winners of the show will be decided as much by their health and ability to withstand the rigors of the show as their fighting potential. Coaches will have to move their training camps to Las Vegas, where the show is taped. Plenty of fighters like to be cloistered off from the rest of the world during training camp, and the temptations of Sin City could be a bit much to handle during camp. That could limit the pool of fighters who want to serve as coaches.

But those are minor quibbles for a show that lost its must-watch edge years ago. The UFC promised a fresh start with Fox, and the changes to "The Ultimate Fighter" shows that they're headed in the right direction.
