UFC 137 press conference video: Diaz faces tough questions, passes with flying colors

Nick Diaz has burned some in the media in the past, so when several media folks had the chance to grill him a bit they did it during today's final prefight press conference in Las Vegas.

A local television sports anchor went after Diaz particularly hard, but the highly volatile Diaz kept his cool. Watch the exchange on the full archive of the presser (25:50 mark).

Thousands Pay Final Respects To Marco Simoncelli At Moving Funeral

Marco Simoncelli was finally laid to rest on Thursday, amidst a massive crowd who had come to pay their last respects. The funeral was a packed affair, full of the friends and family of the Italian, as well as a large number of people from the world of motorcycle racing. The service, held in the Santa Maria Assunta church in the small town of Coriano, not far from the Misano circuit, started at 3pm and was led by the Bishop of Rimini, Francesco Lambiasi, when Simoncelli's coffin was carried in by friends and members of his San Carlo Gresini team. It ended a little over an hour afterwards, as Simoncelli was taken from the church, to the strains of Italian pop legend Vasco Rossi singing "Siamo solo noi". His body was taken to Cesena, where he is due to be cremated.

Massive crowds lined the streets of Coriano, and watched the funeral on large screens set up outside the church. Simoncelli's coffin was accompanied by mass applause on its journey to and from the church, and balloons with the words "SIC" and his racing number, 58, were also released in tribute as he passed. Inside the church, Simoncelli's coffin was flanked on either side by the Gilera 250 RSA on which he won the 250 World Championship in 2008, and the Honda RC212V which he raced this year in MotoGP, and on which he achieved two pole positions and two podiums this season.

Frankie Edgar trying to get Jets another win tonight

Frankie Edgar trying to get Jets another win tonightLast season, UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar spoke to the New York Jets on the eve of their pivotal game against the Texans. Their come-from-behind win put them in first place and helped them get to the playoffs.

The Jets have another important game Monday night. They face the Miami Dolphins, and need a win. New York sits at 2-3 and have to come up with a win to keep pace with the Patriots and the Bills.

According to MMA Fighting, Edgar visited with Rex Ryan's team on Sunday night. The timing makes sense for Edgar, as he just came from behind again in a bout with Gray Maynard. This time, he won by KO, which is something that the Jets will want to do to their division.

But against the 0-4 Dolphins? They really need inspiration to take out the team whose coach is on the hot seat? With the Patriots and Bills on their schedule in the next few weeks, they may be going to the Edgar well a bit early.

Sonnen threatens to turn up the heat on Silva; ?Spider?s? manager says Chael is either crazy or stupid

Chael Sonnen is still waiting and he's beginning to lose his patience.

On Saturday, the middleweight title challenger sent out a cryptic tweet directed at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva basically saying accept the fight or beware.

Sonnen threatens to turn up the heat on Silva; ?Spider?s? manager says Chael is either crazy or stupid

Silva's manager Ed Soares appeared with the folks on HDNet's "Inside MMA" and hasn't changed his stance on giving Sonnen a second shot.

"I think Chael's delusional," Soares said of Sonnen's claim that he's the real champ and that the loss at UFC 117 was less than legitimate. "At the end of the day, he tapped, he quit, he gave up. Take a number and get to the back of the line. You had your opportunity."

Soares said Silva had little reaction to Sonnen's challenge in the Octagon at UFC 136.

"He just thinks the guy's crazy. He's just thinks the guy is a lunatic. It doesn't really affect him too much," said Soares.

Silva did tell Soares that Sonnen's shots at his wife were disrespectful.

HDNet's Bas Rutten seemed to agree with Soares' back of the line comment (2:50 mark). Who's in this imaginary line and who does Sonnen need to beat to earn the next shot? It's hard to name anyone else in the division currently who deserves the shot more than Sonnen.

Video analysis: Dana White meets with Showtime, what?s cooking?

Dana White spent time in New York this week, surprisingly he sat down with officials from Showtime.

The UFC president has repeatedly gone on record saying he doesn't want to deal with the network, but now that Ken Hershman, Showtime's former Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports & Event Programming, has left for HBO, new doors could open.

Yesterday, White teased fans and the MMA media by suggesting something new could be on the horizon.

We checked in with Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole to find out what he's heard about the latest round of talks between the promotion and the network. It was believed that the two would be going their separate ways after the Strikeforce deal is finished, maybe not.

Gresini Press Release After Marco Simoncelli's Funeral: "Diob Quanta Gente!"

After the funeral of Marco Simoncelli at Coriano in Italy today, the Gresini press office issued the following press release:

DIOBÒ QUANTA GENTE!

'Super Sic' will have looked down on his funeral today and no doubt said: "Diobò quanta gente!" ("Good lord, that's a lot of people!"). "Did so many people really want to wish me well?" he would have added. The demonstration of affection towards 'Super Sic', tragically killed last Sunday at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, was from another planet. Yesterday around ten thousand people came to say goodbye as he laid at rest in the Municipal Theatre in Coriano whilst today the number of people present in the small town and at the Misano circuit, where the events were shown on a big screen, was simply incalculable. The world of motorcycling flocked to be by his side as he was finally laid to rest. The funeral service was led by the Bishop of Rimini, Francesco Lambiasi, at the church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Coriano, where the body of "Super Sic" was carried by his closest friends in the presence of his family, the friends he spent so many happy times with, the team and other dignitaries from the world of motorcycling, World Champions from different disciplines of racing and sport, other personalities and his two most famous motorcycles: the Gilera that he rode to the 250cc World Championship and the Honda he raced this season. Outside the church, which could only hold 450 people, thousands and thousands more watched on two more big screens, with another in the Coriano town square. The most emotional moment came when the Vasco Rossi song "Siamo solo noi" was played as Marco's coffin was carried out of the the church of Our Lady of the Assumption to make its final journey. Goodbye "Super Sic", you will always be in our hearts.

Culinary Union spearheads ?the UFC is anti-gay? campaign, Perez Hilton now on board

Culinary Union spearheads ?the UFC is anti-gay? campaign, Perez Hilton now on board

Who thought the UFC's battle to get into New York would come to this? The Culinary Union in New York and gossip guru Perez Hilton are lashing out at the fight promotion claiming it's anti-gay.

The mixed martial arts fighting promotion is still unable to get fights licensed in New York. Owner Lorenzo Fertitta and president Dana White haven't hidden their feelings about the real culprit in the battle. Both have pointed the finger of blame at the state's powerful Culinary Union.

Last week in a letter to Anheuser-Busch, the union fired back saying the UFC allows homophobic behavior from it fighters and personalities.

  • In recent videos, UFC light heavyweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson repeatedly urged Japanese fans to repeat an anti-gay slur.' The fans, who do not appear to understand English, repeated the anti-gay slur at Jackson's urging. In one video, Jackson instructed a Japanese man to say, "Goodbye, I want you to piss on my face."
  • In an expletive-filled video rant posted on YouTube.com, UFC president Dana White used an anti-gay slur, saying, "Whoever gave you that quote is a [expletive] and a [expletive] faggot and a [expletive] liar and everything else. He also uttered the "F" word a total of 34 times, the "S" word 4 times, and referred to a female sports journalist as a "[expletive] dumb bitch."
  • According to the Los Angeles Times, "Rampage" Jackson shouted "every conceivable gay slur" at a movie crew member of "The A-Team" who had called him a homophobic epithet. He was also quoted in the article saying, "Acting is kind of gay. It makes you soft."
  • In a recent UFC promotional video, Michael Bisping, a UFC middleweight fighter and coach on the reality television show "The Ultimate Fighter," screamed an anti-gay slur at his opponent. In a media conference call, Bisping tried to. smear an opposing-coach. on "The Ultimate Fighter" by saying that his opponent had a "gay chiropractor" on his staff."
  • Joe Rogan, who does commentary for televised UFC events, recently used a homophobic slur while referring to a MMA blogger.' Rogan also to referred to an MMA blogger as a part of the female anatomy. According to sportswriter Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, Rogan then wrote on a blog, "Never did I imagine that so many people would get their panties in a bunch about the use of the word [expletive] to describe a female blogger."

Now Hilton, the openly-gay blogger, is firing shots at the promotion.

Ugh! We are not happy to hear about this. While sports organizations like the NBA and MLB are working to end homophobia, others like the NHL seem to be tolerating it. Unfortunately, the UFC (Utlimate Fighting Championship) seems to be flat out endorsing anti-gay bigotry!

Some of these incidents go back a few years, so it looks like the Culinary Union waited for an opportune time to go on the attack. It just so happens that the UFC is debuting on network television in less than a month on Fox.

Bellator 54: Makovsky fighting for respect

Zack Makovsky is very good. How good? It's difficult to truly gauge if he's amongst the top 10 bantamweights in the world.

He stormed to Bellator's 135-pound tourney title last year, but even he recognizes that he needs to be more active and face a higher level of competition.

"I don't know. I try not to get caught up in any of that. It kind of is what it is. The UFC is by far the biggest name in the game. I would think to most casual fans, they don't know the sport is called Mixed Martial Arts. To them, the sport is Ultimate Fighting," Makovsky told Bloody Elbow's Matt Roth. "It's frustrating from that kind of stand point. But at the same time you appreciate what the UFC is doing and they're obviously doing good things for their business."

Makovsky (13-2) is one of the headliners against Ryan Roberts at Bellator 54 tomorrow night in Atlantic City.

Bellator's tournament format is great because you control your own destiny, but the television exposure from the WEC might have been more beneficial over the last few years.

"I mean, of course if I fought in the WEC earlier I would have had that exposure so people would know me better but I kind of really started building my name in Bellator. I kind of was under the radar until I got in the tournament and ended up winning it. There's not much else I could have done otherwise. I don't think the WEC would have had me in there before I created a name in Bellator which is a good thing about Bellator," said Makovsky.

Makovsky's story is similar to many of the elite fighters around mixed martial arts. He was a standout wrestler at Drexel in Philadelphia, but unlike most high level college wrestlers he wasn't a big high school star. He walked on at Drexel and when he was pushed to new limits, Makovsky took it as a challenge and made himself into an elite grappler.

The 28-year-old has a bright future and at 5-foot-4, he looks like a candidate to be a hot shot down at 125 pounds when that division blows up. But he's got to get his work done at Bellator 54.

Roberts is big for the weight. He's got UFC experience and been in there at lightweight with guys like Marcus Aurelio, Donald Cerrone and Duane Ludwig.

Bellator CEO Rebney talks his fighters, Spike and the Olympics

Bellator CEO Rebney talks his fighters, Spike and the OlympicsAs Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney looks at what has happened in the fifth season, he can't help but still be amazed at how well his fighters perform week in and week out. He talked to Cagewriter about some of his favorite moments of the season and Bellator's future.

"The thing that's made me happy is the level of fights. From event no. 3 on, they've just been great. Dantas' flying knee, Alexis [Vila], the way that he knocked out Joe Warren was crazy, Brian Rogers, and saying to me in the incredibly articulate way he speaks as a teacher, 'I'm going to bring it.' And then he did. Shlemenko pulling of a submission victory, there's all these things that have been jumping out at me. There's just been moment after moment," Rebney said.

One of the fights that he is most looking forward to is the Nov. 19 title fight between champ Eddie Alvarez and tournament champ Michael Chandler. He says that no one should count out Chandler.

"Nobody is talking about Chandler in the upper echelon of the division. I'll be honest with you. I don't know if I can count on one hand the guys who can beat him."

That fight will air on MTV2, but with the UFC ending their relationship with Spike TV, there's a chance that Bellator could switch to the station that is aimed towards young men. Bellator's preliminary fights air on Spike's website, and Bellator's deal is with MTV's parent company.

"We're a great position in that our deal is with MTV networks, so it's that larger corporate umbrella. They control Spike, MTV, MTV2. You never know what the future will bring. The foreseeable future will be what it is, which is MTV2 and Spike.com for the prelims, but Spike is better than anyone in this space. They get it better than anyone."

Rebney is also excited about some of the challenges coming up for his fighters, both in and out of Bellator. He said that they are working on a match-up between DREAM fighter Shinya Aoki and Alvarez, but that it will likely happen in February, after Aoki fights in DREAM's New Year's Eve show.

Warren is working on returning to his wrestling roots and will try to make the 2012 Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic team. Rebney supports the world champion wrestler in trying to go for the gold.

"It's a great platform for Warren. If he can be our champion at 145, and then go and make the U.S. Olympic team, what a great thing for Bellator and for MMA."

Colin Edwards To Miss Final MotoGP Round At Valencia

Colin Edwards is to miss the final round of MotoGP at Valencia. The Monster Tech 3 Yamaha rider is to go undergo surgery to repair the shoulder he damaged in the accident that fatally injured Marco Simoncelli, and he will not be fit to ride at what would have been his last outing for the team.

The injuries Edwards sustained are also a blow to the NGM Forward Racing team: Edwards was due to start testing the BMW-powered Suter at the Valencia test on the Tuesday and Wednesday after the final MotoGP race, but that will now also be impossible. Instead, Edwards will be recovering from surgery to fix the cartilage in his shoulder which was damaged in the crash at Sepang. The good news for Edwards is that he did not fracture his wrists or heel in the crash, which the Texan had feared he cracked in the fall. Edwards is said to be recovering well from the crash, despite his injuries.

There is no news of a replacement for Edwards at the moment, but the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team are almost certain to have someone ride the Texan's bike. With Simoncelli's bike to be understandably vacant, though on display for the fans at Valencia, and Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo also not yet confirmed as participating, the grid at Valencia threatens to be dangerously small.

Below is the press release from the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team:

Edgar moving to No. 4 on Yahoo! Sports? pound-for-pound list, Dana White says he?s No. 2

The competition for label of top five fighter in the world is heating up nicely. That's because the fighters in the 135, 145 and 155 pound divisions are now getting the respect they deserve.

Frank Edgar, the lightweight champ, is moving up to No. 4 on the latest Yahoo! Sports' pound-for-pound list, but Dana White says that still too low.

"He's the Arturo Gatti of MMA. I have so much respect for him. I'm going to say it here tonight and I don't care who disagrees, you're wrong and I'm right ... He's the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, period," White said following UFC 136.

White's reasoning? The UFC president says Edgar is fighting out of weight class and still excelling.

"[...] If you really look at what pound-for-pound means, you cannot deny that Frankie Edgar is No.2. The guy weighs a 145 pounds, he's beating guys at 155 pounds," said White.

White admitted that he was extremely emotional after the Edgar-Gray Maynard fight at UFC 136, but he'd never seen anything like the comebacks posted by the champion.

"How many times have you seen where a guy gets hurt as bad as he did in the first round. I told you that's movie [expletive]. That stuff doesn't really happen in true life. There's two guys I've seen do it - Arturo Gatti and Frank Edgar," White said. "What he did the last time and this time ... he's an amazing human being. He's an incredible athlete. He's got a heart the size of this room. I mean, that's no promoter [expletive]."

Edgar deflected all the love by simply saying "it's a Jersey thing."

"He had 'Snooki' and 'The Situation' out there, he couldn't let them down tonight," joked White.

Edgar moving to No. 4 on Yahoo! Sports? pound-for-pound list, Dana White says he?s No. 2

Do you agree with White's explanation? Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole pressed both fighter and promoter on the fact that Edgar did get rocked in both fights. The greats don't get rocked consistently, do they? Or does the weight class explanation hold water? Edgar is great and he is on top of the most competitive weight class in the world.

You tell us: What fight are you most looking forward to in 2011?

You tell us: What fight are you most looking forward to in 2011?Through the end of the year, the MMA world will go on a massive run of fights, taking time off only for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nearly every weekend will feature events from the UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator.

Ben Askren vs. Jay Hieron at Bellator 56: Askren and Hieron have been jawing at each other over this bout since Hieron won the right to fight Askren for the Bellator welterweight belt. Askren's been working on his striking with Duke Roufus and his band of strikers in Milwaukee. Will that, combine with his world-class wrestling, be enough to hold off Hieron?

Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox 1: Though Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos will be shown to the masses in the UFC's first fight on Fox, it's hard not to get hyped about Guida and Henderson's scrap. Both fighters are known for putting on exciting bouts and ridiculous conditioning. The best part? This bout should decide the next challenger for the UFC lightweight belt.

Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 139: Pick your favorite storyline in this fight. Henderson's return to UFC after winning the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship. Two PRIDE champions meeting up. Shogun's chance to get revenge for Henderson's win over Rua's brother. Two men with scary striking power being thrown in the Octagon. No matter which way you look at it, this fight should be fun.

Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida at UFC 140: The UFC light heavyweight champ will get another chance to defend the belt against a former champion. Machida is 1-2 in his last fights, and like Jones, was once considered an unsolvable puzzle. This match-up will turn the main event at UFC 140 into a chess game.

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem at UFC 141: Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Overeem needed a big opponent for his first bout in the UFC, and opponents don't get much bigger than former champ Brock Lesnar. For Lesnar, it will be his first fight back since losing the belt. The Octagon will need reinforcement for this bout.

With so many fights coming up before the end of the year, there's a pretty good chance that Cagewriter didn't list your favorite fight. Vote in the poll, and tell us your favorite in the comments or on Facebook.

Georges St. Pierre is hoping for a Super Bowl weekend return

When Georges St. Pierre realized that his knee was too injured for him to fight at UFC 137, he was shaken up. He admitted that he let some emotion show when he had to pull out of the bout with Carlos Condit.

"I'm not going to lie, I cried yesterday," St-Pierre told SportsNets. "I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight."

He sprained his MCL while training on Tuesday afternoon. Though it was an injury serious enough to pull him from the fight, it won't keep him out for too long. He is hoping to be able to fight on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card, normally one of the bigger events on their calendar.

"I would say maybe end of January, possibly the beginning of February [for my return]?Super Bowl, around this time," St-Pierre said.

Condit told Cagewriter that he was hoping to fight GSP for the belt by the end of the year, but with GSP's timetable, Condit will have to wait a bit longer.
