UFC 118 blowout: Couture takes Toney to MMA school

It was even worse than we thought. James Toney called out mixed martial arts and begged for a fight, but what he showed in the Octagon could barely be called a fight. The out-of-shape boxing legend came out with his left hand at his side and was very stationary. He was a sitting duck for UFC veteran and Olympic-level wrestler Randy Couture, who scored a takedown just 11 seconds into the fight. Toney was helpless on the mat, where Couture moved to a dominant mount position and eventually slapped on an arm-triangle choke to finish the fight in just over three minutes. "I think, in reality, if he's only been training nine months, it's a real short order to pick up everything," said Couture (19-10). "I give real credit to James. He took the risk. All us MMA guys love boxing. Hopefully there's a whole bunch of boxers who will love MMA."By the reaction of the fans at the TD Garden in Boston, MMA diehards don't like boxers. As Couture was mauling Toney on the canvas, a chant of "UFC, UFC" filled the arena.  It was a pretty embarrassing display by Toney. It was almost as if he didn't drill at all  on what to do if he was taken down. Frankly, the weigh-in was a sign of things to come when Toney weigh-in a career-high 237 pounds. He was nearly 20 pounds lighter for his last boxing match in Sept. of 2009. Couture did whatever he wanted from the top and it was clear Toney hadn't learned any technique to try and extricate himself from the position. According to Compustrike, Couture landed 38 strikes to just six for Toney.Couture, speaking during the postfight interview with UFC color analyst Joe Rogan, said he saw this coming. "No surprises. This is exactly what we trained to do. I worked on that arm triangle for over a year."That's when Couture's grappling coach, Neil Melanson, walked over to his fighter and gave him a black belt suggesting that he'd just earned it.Toney was gracious in defeat and surprisingly said that he wasn't done with MMA."He just caught me. He caught me sleeping. I'll be back. I ain't gonna quit," said Toney, as he was booed by the Boston faithful. "My ground game's alright. He fought a great fight. Randy Couture’s a great fighter."Toney was a great boxer, piling up 72 wins against just six losses, but he's far from his prime. It's next to impossible for a boxer to cross over to MMA without at least a few years of training in all elements of the sport. And that probably only applies for a guy still in his boxing prime.

In a classic, Pettis triangles Roller at WEC 50

If the WEC was undecided about giving a title shot to the winner of the Anthony Pettis-Shane Roller fight, the promotion had to be sold after watching the thriller that unfolded tonight in Las Vegas. The lightweights engaged in a great back and forth battle that moved all over the cage. Roller had his moments but was down 2-0 and likely losing the third, when he went for broke in the final seconds. Pettis capitalized on Roller's aggression, slapped on a triangle choke and scored the finish at 4:51 of the third round. The 23-year-old Pettis is now in line for a title shot against WEC champ Ben Henderson."My confidence is as high as it's ever been," said Pettis. "I'm ready for the champ. Where's he at? Ben, where you at? WEC needs a new face, it's me baby!" Update: The WEC announce Pettis got the $10,000 submission of the night bonus.  Pettis (11-1, 4-1 WEC) set up the victory with some excellent grappling work. He avoided Roller's nasty takedowns and even when he was dumped to the mat, Pettis quickly got back to his feet or put his opponent in potential submission predicaments. Even more shocking was Pettis' ability to takedown Roller, a three-time All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State. Pettis was 3-for-3 on takedown attempts while Roller was just 2-of-6. According to Compustrike, Pettis dominated the striking outlanding Roller 63-27. "Taking down Shane Roller was pretty good," said Pettis. "He's a tough guy. I never got hit in the face that many times. Big ups to Shane." Roller, who suffered a cut on the bridge of his nose in the final 90 seconds, said he never got into a groove.  "I was a little frustrated. It was one of those nights where it wasn't clicking," said Roller (8-3, 5-2 WEC). "I felt sluggish all three rounds. I didn't feel strong in here for some reason." In the lead up to the fight, Pettis had drilled his wrestling heavily. He had worked on his takedown defense with former Olympian and two-time NCAA wrestling champ Ben Askren. Early on, it was clear Pettis' prep work was paying dividends. He thwarted two takedown attempts in the first two minutes. On the feet, he was much faster and more creative. He landed the best blow of the fight with a crazy, looping head kick that landed on the back of Roller's head (pictured).  From the start of the second round, Roller didn't seem right. He was backing up and allowing Pettis to control the cage. That's when Pettis scored a takedown, controlled Roller on the ground for a little over two minutes and landed some good body shots. But Roller wasn't out of the fight as he landed a crushing left hook that stunned Pettis. He just didn't have the additional burst to pour it on.  Roller did score a takedown early in the third but he could never settle into Pettis' guard long enough to smash him with anything significant and several times he almost got caught in positions where a triangle could've been slapped on. It was a sign of things to come as Pettis finally got him with nine seconds left in the fight.

Front Row Press Conference Transcript From Indianapolis

MODERATOR: Ben, quite a weekend for you. Up and down, as it has been for I think most people here at Indianapolis. First of all, congratulations, pole position. Two weeks ago was the first front row, and now you've gone one better in pole.
BEN SPIES: Yeah, it's a dream, I mean to have a pole position at any time in MotoGP and to be able to do it in the first season on the Monster Tech 3 bike in front of the American crowd, it's great and add Indianapolis to it. It's kind of ticked all the boxes this weekend. We just got to, you know, not get ahead of ourselves, so it gives us some common edge for tomorrow but got to kind of live the moment right now. You know, it kind of took the pressure off the announcement on Friday and just knowing what's going on and am I'm really wanting to repay the Tech 3 team because they've helped put me in a place to be there and, you know, to be able to get a pole for them and hopefully can end the season good and keep being consistent and progress. But, you know, today we'll just savor the moment right now and go in tomorrow and try to put a hard 45 minutes and see what happens.
MODERATOR: It's been an interesting weekends, I think, for everybody in MotoGP, grip level has been a problem. You've crashed yourself, and the weather conditions also seem to be getting a little bit hotter.

Grabowski, Konrad Advance in Bellator Heavyweight Tournament

by Michael David SmithCHICAGO -- Damian Grabowski and Cole Konrad won Thursday night at Bellator 25 to advance to the semifinals of Bellator's Season 3 heavyweight tournament.

Grabowski, an undefeated Polish fighter making his U.S. debut, at times looked like he had a size and strength deficit against his big and -- let's face it -- fat opponent, Scott Barrett. But he ultimately proved to have too well-rounded a game for Barrett to handle, and he easily won a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges' cards. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Edgar may want to play up 'Jersey Shore' image a bit more

With another win over B.J. Penn, Frank Edgar can solidfy his reputation as one of the best fighters in the world. UFC 118 is a huge card and should do big numbers on pay-per-view, plus beating a guy like Penn twice will leave little doubt that Edgar belongs in the top 10 pound-for-pound. That said, the UFC lightweight champ still won't be the most famous guy to come out of the Jersey Shore recently. MMA is growing but it's still a niche sport. Meanwhile you can only hope to contain the Jersey Shore juggernaut that is Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino from the show "Jersey Shore" on MTV. Before, you say 'who cares' or 'the show is stupid', the latest news on The Sitch are pretty eye opening.Sorrentino, who hails from Staten Island, N.Y., which is really nowhere near Seaside Heights and Edgar's hometown of Toms River, has turned out to be a marketing genius. What does that mean? While a fighter like Edgar will probably pull down $150,000-$200,000 in 2010, The Situation is going to be in a slightly higher tax bracket. As the second season of MTV's pop-culture phenomenon "Jersey Shore" gobbles up
the biggest ratings the network has seen in seven years, breakout star
Sorrentino (a.k.a. The Situation) is astutely capitalizing on his fame. By
year's end, the 29-year-old stands to earn more than $5 million, a source
familiar with his finances told The Hollywood Reporter.  E! News reports that Sorrentino is now the highest paid reality star on television. The Situation is also cleaning house on Twitter where he has over 178,000 followers. In comparision, his Garden State compadre Edgar has just over 12,000. In fact, the most popular fighter at UFC 118 on Twitter is Randy Couture with roughly 46,000 followers. Maybe it's time for Edgar to find "Ronnie" at Karma and take him out. Season 4 could feature Frankie along with The Situation, Pauly D and Vinnie.

WEC 50: Anthony Pettis Submits Shane Roller

by Michael David SmithAnthony Pettis put on the best performance of his promising MMA career Wednesday night at WEC 50, dominating Roller for more than 14 minutes before finally getting him to tap out with just nine seconds remaining in the third round, earning a submission win and likely a World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight title shot.

Early in the fight the 23-year-old Pettis showed serious improvement in his takedown defense, keeping the fight standing against a good wrestler in Roller. He also showed off some creative striking, employing a variety of kicks that had Roller frustrated. As the fight wore on Pettis also showed a more sophisticated ground game than he had in the past, and the way he finished the fight was a thing of beauty, escaping from a guillotine choke and then catching Roller in the triangle that made Roller tap at the 4:51 mark of the third.

Bellator opens season three with impressive wins from Fujii, Lombard

Bellator's third season kicked off in Hollywood, Fla., on Thursday night with action in the women's and heavyweight tournaments, as well as a non-title bout for the middleweight champ.Arguably the world's best female fighter, Megumi Fujii won with a second-round submission. Carla Esparza took the fight on short notice and hung with Fujji for most of the first round, matching Fujii punch-for-punch. Fujii grabbed a toe hold late in the first round, but could not finish. She did not take as long in the second round, using her smooth grappling to grab an armbar out of nowhere. Esparza was forced to tap at 0:57, giving Fujii the bout. That not only moves "Mega-Megu" onto the semifinal round of Bellator's 115-pound female tournament, but it also gives her an unprecedented 21st straight victory.Jessica Aguilar, who still has not told her mother that she's a fighter, came away with a win and a spot in the semifinals. Aguilar used outstanding grappling to control Lynn Alvarez, finishing her off with an arm-triangle at 4:01 in the first round. In the first fight of the Bellator heavyweight tournament, Neil Grove TKOed Eddie Sanchez in just 1:32. Grove knocked Sanchez down early and beat on his head. Twice, Sanchez fruitlessly tried for armbars, but Grove easily maneuvered out and returned to his feet to beat on Sanchez more. With his left eye swollen nearly shut, Sanchez had trouble returning to his feet. The referee asked if Sanchez could continue. When Sanchez asked for a minute, the referee stopped the fight.Middleweight champion Hector Lombard took on Whisper Goodman, a former NFL running back, in a non-title fight. It would not have mattered if the bout was scheduled to go five rounds, as Lombard knocked out Goodman in 38 seconds. Lombard came out swinging and overwhelmed his opponent, throwing a final right that took Goodman out. After the bout, Lombard inexplicably called out heavyweight Josh Barnett, who was at the fights to corner Fujii. "I don't care how much weight you are," said Lombard, an Olympic judo player for Cuba. "Josh Barnett, come over." In other Bellator news, the promotion announced that the next bout for champion Eddie Alvarez would not be taking on Pat Curran, the lightweight tourney champ, as planned. Curran sustained an injury, so Roger Huerta will be stepping in for a non-title bout in October.

Making his pro debut, Ryan Couture tries to emulate his favorite fighter

He's certainly no Montana Fishburne. Thank God for that. Ryan Couture, son of Randy, one of the most famous mixed martial artists in the history of the sport, was willing to take things slowly. While Laurence Fishburne's daughter is going into porn to "accelerate" her rise to stardom, Couture trained hard and stayed under the radar, fighting every four months or so on the amateur level. If there were an amateur level in the late '90s, it's probably the way his father would've gone about things when he was making his transition from amateur wrestler to pro fighter. The hard work has been put in and Team Couture thinks now's the time for Ryan to make a run at his own pro career. He makes his debut Friday night at Strikeforce Challengers 10 in Arizona. Couture, 27, is up front in answering critics who say no fighter should get a chance to make their pro debut on Showtime.  "I think it's absolutely because of my last name and selling tickets," Couture [told SB Nation Arizona] on Wednesday during a pre-fight workout session. "It's not like I've paid my dues as a pro and have a solid pro resume to justify putting me on the main card. It's a business thing and the name gets a lot of attention. That's just a fact of life at this point. There are going to be people who are bitter about that and hold that against me but there's nothing I can do about that."You can't blame Couture if he feels a ton of pressure. After all, his father's a former UFC champ in two divisions and helped build the sport. But the younger Couture is too grounded to get bogged down by his father's legacy. Couture told IFight365.com:  "Being who I am, I feel like I get a lot of extra attention, but the only extra pressure I feel is the kind that I put on myself from trying to perform to the level that I know I can. There are going to be very few people that have the kind of impact on the sport that my dad has, so thinking I will equal that would be unrealistic. So I’m just trying to do everything I can to make sure I perform to the best of my abilities. The rest will take care of itself."He says being the son of a legend and one of the more solid guys in the sports world can only be viewed as a positive.  "I’d have to be a fool to think coming into this sport that others wouldn’t focus on who my father is. But I accepted that and embrace it. Truly, I couldn’t spend time talking about a better person. I’m pretty sure he would be my favorite fighter even if he wasn’t a blood relative."Couture manages his father's gym Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. It's also where he trains with lightweights like Tyson Griffin and his father's gurus like grappling coach Neil Melanson and striking coach Tim Lane. During his five amateur fights, he's looked most comfortable on the ground. He's pretty humble about his skills and knows he has long way to go.  "All of my wins have come via submission, so I’d have to go with that. But I feel like I’m pretty dangerous everywhere. My wrestling’s not where it should be yet, so there are a lot of guys that are going to beat me there. But with my submission game and decent striking, I feel like I make up for that."Couture faces 20-year-old Lucas Stark.

Norton To Make MotoGP Comeback In 2012?

If the point of the 2012 regulations was to see more manufacturers return to the MotoGP grid, the move is already looking like a success. Both BMW and Aprilia are linked to moves back to MotoGP - though mainly through privateer CRT team efforts, rather than as factory prototypes- and now, another manufacturer looks set to join the fold. For the German-language magazine Speedweek is reporting that the legendary English manufacturer Norton is set to enter a two-man team for 2012.
According to the veteran Austrian journalist Gunther Wiesinger, Norton has asked Dorna for two places on the 2012 grid, and Norton boss Stuart Garner has submitted a signed application to Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta to race when the MotoGP class returns to 1000cc. The MotoGP effort is part of a long-term marketing plan by Norton to change their image from classic motorcycles to modern sportsbike manufacturer, with plans to introduce a range of high-tech road bikes in the future. The Norton website confirms this intention, stating:
"Future development will also lead to the introduction of the all new modern motorcycles and will represent the ultimate expression of the Norton brand."

Florian says Maynard is a boring fighter and too cocky

Kenny Florian's been there before. The UFC lightweight lost a title fight very early in his career against Sean Sherk and then ripped off six straight wins. Maybe he was a little hard-headed for his next shot against B.J. Penn. Florian stuck with a flawed gameplan and lost in the fourth round via rear-naked choke. He now knows it's important to stay grounded and he thinks Gray Maynard had better follow the same advice.  "I definitely sense a sort of cockiness. A different attitude than what he's shown in the past," Florian said of his opponent at UFC 118 (0:22 mark). "I've been there too. We  fall victim to it. I think he's overlooking me. I think he's already looking towards the title. He's definitely on the cocky side."At just 9-0 in MMA, Florian wonders where Maynard's cockiness is coming from. He also wants to see how Maynard deals with adversity.  "Gray's never encountered that type of pressure. He's never never
encountered when someone's kind of beating down on him," Florian told Larry Pepe from ProMMA Radio (2:57 mark) "He's always been
the aggressor. He's always been the bully. It's easy to have fights
like that when you're winning the fight the whole time. How is he going
to respond when he's getting beaten down?" Maynard's never really been beaten down but he was frustrated to no end in his last fight against Nate Diaz. Diaz's incessant chatter in the Octagon took Maynard out of his game. If that screwed with Maynard's head, what happens if he's actually losing the fight?  "How's he going to respond
when he's hurt and he's hurt again and he's hurt again," said Florian. "And he's losing
every minute of every round. What's that gonna feel like for him?" Maynard has been a lot more outspoken in the lead up to this fight. Part of that is the realization that guys like Dan Hardy, Paul Daley and even Diaz moved up the ladder a lot faster by self-promoting more heavily. Florian doesn't see that it's just a ploy by Maynard to push the fight and his image. He's been insulted by Maynard saying that he can beat Florian in every aspect of MMA.  "If he doesn't respect my skills, he's gonna be in trouble," said Florian. He suggested Maynard will be full of excuses if he loses the fight. "It's gonna be one of those things where (Maynard says), 'I don't understand what happened or Kenny got lucky. Or I made a mistake and I'll be back and better than ever before.' I don't get that. It's created a lot of motivation for me."Florian doesn't talk a lot of trash but he decided to fire back at Maynard a little (6:10 mark).  "I don't think he's the most exciting fighter," Florian said of Maynard. "I don't jump up and down when there's a Gray Maynard fight going on, but I do respect his skills."This is a huge fight in the lightweight division. The winner has a good shot at meeting the winner of Frank Edgar-B.J. Penn. From a promotional standpoint, you'd have to think the UFC would love to see Maynard victory.Check out Pepe's entire interview with Florian here.

Strikeforce Houston weigh-in: Shredded Kennedy could be on verge of big things

Strikeforce
has put together another dynamite card tomorrow night on Showtime. The
televised portion of the event is filled with some of the best young
fighters in the game. Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal is already regarded as a
top 10 light heavyweight and he's six professional fights into his
career. Lawal defends his title against the very dangerous Rafael
"Feijao" Cavalcante. Another great wrestler, Tim Kennedy gets his shot
at stardom in a middleweight title fight against world champion jiu-tisu
ace Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. Kennedy, 30, had a little delay in arriving
at this level. As a member of the Army's Special Forces he was away
from fighting for most of 2004-2006. A winner of four straight fights
(all finishes), Kennedy is ready to make up for lost time. "No
one has really gotten to see everything that I have to offer yet.
Combined my (Showtime) fighting time is like nine minutes or something,"

Kennedy (12-2) told Heavy.com. "All three of (my Strikeforce) fights

His wrestling is good, but it’s not great. I think he’s soft when he’s on his back,"It's
also a big night for Bobby Lashley. The former WWE star needs a win

Night of upsets at Strikeforce: 'King Mo' loses title to 'Feijao'

Competitive balance may be a fallacy you can strive for in other sports, but in fighting you need big stars. Strikeforce took a beating tonight as Bobby Lashley fell to start the Showtime telecast, then one of the promotion's brightest young stars Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal found himself face first on the mat in less than 12 minutes. Rafael "Feijao' Cavalcante was the bigger, more powerful and more technical fighter. It was just a matter of time before King Mo got caught by some kind of nasty strike. In the third round, he was hit with a huge knee in a clinch situation. His knees buckled and as he was stumbling backwards, Feijao nailed him with another right. Lawal fell to his back and rose back up in shaky fashion. He struggled to hold on to Feijao against the cage as he got pummeled by elbows. After absorbing over a dozen elbows and punches, Lawal's left arm dropped. That's when referee John McCarthy stepped in to stop things at 1:14 of the third. Lawal was clearly out, as he fell face first to the mat. Feijao (10-2) took the Strikeforce light heavyweight title from Lawal.   It's not shocking that Lawal (7-1) lost. After making the move over from the world of amateur wrestling, He's still a very inexperienced fighter. Lawal, who just missed out on the 2008 U.S. Olympic wrestling team, allowed his grappling to carry him to an unbeaten record against a decent slate of fighters. But tonight Feijao proved to be too strong. Lawal scored two takedowns but also worked very hard while missing on three others. Even when Feijao hit the deck, he got himself to his feet relatively quicklyLawal outlanded Feijao 67-50 but most of the Brazilian's shots were much heavier.

Harley Continues to Chase a Younger Audience

We’ve gotten more than a few emails from readers between the ages of 18-30 saying they’ve been approached at motorcycling events by market research company representatives working for Harley-Davidson. In conjunction with beefing up its Sportster line-up (the goto motorcycle at Harley-Davidson for catering to Gen-Y/X riders) with more youth-oriented motorcycles, Harley-Davidson is clearly trying [...]

Northside When..?

I stopped by Northside today and it looks like they haven't done much with the park accept put a fence and guard house up and sweep away the gravel. The bank to bank gap still isn't finished so I wonder if there is some drama going on with the park. I've been told the park will open in September, but that could mean the first or last day of September.

'I'm just a mental fart from being on top again' says Buentello

The up-and-down career of Paul Buentello takes another turn this weekend in Southern California. Now back down in "the minors," Buentello faces another guy who is trying to recapture the results of his prime in former UFC champion Tim Sylvia. Both big men have dealt with the same issues of motivation and managing fights mentally. Sylvia probably won't admit that he's lost some of the fire and that walking around at 300-plus pounds is hurting his career, but Buentello is owning up to his gaffes.  "I never realized how far behind I am mentally on this fight game," Buentello told FightHubtv.com (2:31 mark). "I have the heart, I have the skills, but just that one little aspect of controlling my mind over my body. Because once my body gets tired, my mind just doesn't control what my body wants to do. It comes into the cardio and quitting."Buentello (28-12, 3-3 UFC) meets Sylvia (26-6, 10-4 UFC) Saturday night in the main event of "War on the Mainland" in Irvine, Calif.  At the end of 2009, Buentello got a new lease on life. He got out of his deal with Strikeforce and after a three-year absence from the UFC he was brought him back. But the 36-year-old failed to seize the opportunity. He gassed in a slugfest against Stefan Struve at UFC 107 and then mentally broke in a loss against Cheick Kongo in March at UFC on Versus 1. Shortly after, he was dumped by the promotion. That's when fellow fighter and trainer, Antonio McKee stepped in. Actually, he did more than step in. He lobbied Buentello and his management to allow him to try and fix the 250-pound slugger.  "He was telling my manager, I'm just a mental fart away from being on top again," said Buentello. It's all about playing to his strengths."I hit really hard and I'm fast for my size," said Buentello. "If I let my hands go, anything's possible. And that's the problem I've been having the last couple of fights, not going in there with the mental toughness."  McKee, who works out of The Body Shop in Lakewood, Calif., agrees that it's all in Buentello's head.   "If Paul goes out there and hesitates, it could be a short night for Paul," said McKee. "But I don't see [Sylvia] knocking out Paul. Paul's got a tough chin, he hits hard and I wouldn't be surprised if he knocked Tim out with a jab."That's probably a stretch but Buentello does have the speed advantage. Frankly, who knows what kind of shape Sylvia will be in. He last fought and won against World Strongman champ Mariusz Pudzianowski. A few fights before that suffered quick losses to Ray Mercer and Fedor Emelianenko.

Be careful what you wish for: Njokuani's WEC future on life support

At the start of 2010, he was one of the hottest prospects in the WEC's lightweight division. Coming off three straight nasty TKO wins, Anthony Njokuani looked like he was on the quick path to a WEC lightweight title shot. He got schooled by Shane Roller's wrestling in April, and last night at WEC 50, he got destroyed at his own game by Maciej Jewtuszko. In defense of Njokuani, Herb Dean stopped the fight pretty quickly (1:57 mark -- 1:35 into the fight). The 30-year-old had 15 fights under his belt. Didn't he deserve a few extra seconds to try and recover? Once Dean stopped it, Njokuani stood up immediately. What's done is done, but now Njokuani needs to go back to the drawing board.  Fightlinker was happy to see Njokuani lose, pointing to the nasty Tweet he sent out after his loss to Roller. Njokuani asked for someone stand with him. He got his wish and a loss that moves him dangerously close to the unemployment line.

'Showtime' Pettis ready for Roller and MTV

WEC lightweight Anthony Pettis is an unassuming guy. He doesn't walk into his gym, Roufus Training Academy, as the star. Instead, he's the eager-to-learn fighter who soaks up everything he can from his coaches. Still, MTV has chosen to spotlight Pettis on "The World of Jenks," a new show that will immerse the viewer in different types of people's lives. It followed Pettis the week that he KOed Danny Castillo at WEC 47.  "I was coming off a loss, so I didn't know what was going to happen. It could have gone either way," Pettis told Cagewriter. "If I lost again, I was cut from the WEC. But I won, and I won twice, and now I'm that close to a title shot. It was crazy to have the cameras in your face everywhere. It was a cool experience. I'm really interested to see how it turns out."  He doesn't consider himself a star, but it's that eager-to-learn attitude that makes Pettis an interesting fighter to watch and a perfect fit for MTV. Out of his 11 wins, only one fight has gone to decision.  Because of the MTV series, he got the chance to see how his mother reacted to his fights. "She walked out of the arena, and had her head down, and all she heard was a big commotion. That's when I got my headkick. She said, 'What happened, what happened?' Someone said, 'He won!' And she was happy about it. She can't take it at all."Family is an extremely important part of Pettis' life. He trains with his younger brother, Sergio, and Anthony says that his MMA career would make his father proud. "He was the competitive type. With the exposure that I've gotten, I've gone in Milwaukee from no one knowing me to the whole city knows me. Everywhere I go, I have people supporting me. He had a lot of friends, so he'd like that. He was the one who had us in tae kwon do tournaments, so he'd support us." Pettis' father was murdered in 2003, when Anthony was just 15 years old. Martial arts served as a refuge for him, and kept him focused when he could have easily gone down the path to drugs and gangs, as some of his family did."I had the worst of the worst happen to me, and I could have chosen to go anywhere. I could have chosen to give up on anything, be bad, live the street life, go to jail. All my cousins are in gangs. My dad's brother has three boys, and their dad also died in a house robbery, seven years before my dad, and they all joined gangs. They're 34 years old now, and they're lost. Martial arts gave me focus and gave me something to do. If I couldn't come here every day and do this, I'd be lost."For WEC 50, Pettis has his focus trained on Shane Roller, an All-American wrestler. To get ready for him, Pettis has worked with a slew of top wrestlers. Two-time national champion Ben Askren stopped by Roufus Sport to work with Pettis.Pettis knows that Roller will want to take the fight to the ground, so he has been working on takedown defense. Though Pettis is more comfortable on his feet, he believes in all the parts of his game."I'm confident that my skills are better than his, standing up, on the ground, and I'm going to stuff his takedowns."

Mirko Cro Cop Steps Up to Fight Frank Mir at UFC 119

by Michael David SmithMMA legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic will get a chance at earning his biggest win in the Octagon to date on September 25, as the UFC has confirmed that Cro Cop accepted a fight with Frank Mir in the main event at UFC 119.

Cro Cop agreed to take the fight -- his eighth in the UFC -- on short notice after Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira dropped out with hip and knee injuries. Cro Cop's UFC career has been fairly disappointing, with a 4-3 record and all four wins coming against lower-level competition. But a victory over Mir would be a huge step forward for Cro Cop, who hasn't beaten anyone as relevant as Mir in the heavyweight division since he defeated Josh Barnett to win the Pride Openweight Grand Prix in September of 2006. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
