DREAM 16 Friday night: Miller wants to smack down idol Sakuraba

DREAM has put together another interesting card this weekend. Japan's top lightweight Shinya Aoki is featured as is former Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii along with Gegard Mousasi. The fight Japanese fans might be looking forward to the most is another Kazushi Sakuraba superfight. The 41-year old legend faces American Jason Miller. "Mayhem" is a big hit in Japan, but he won't be getting too many cheers in Nagoya. Miller, 29, knows that, but he's still fired up to face a guy that he watched growing up. "It was always my dream to fight Sakuraba," Miller told Heavy.com just before he left for Japan. "It's a bit surreal sitting here, packing my bags, getting ready to step over there across the sea and beat up a dude that I was like 'wow! Sakuraba!' It kicks ass. I'm excited about it."Sakuraba (26-13-1) has been in there with the likes of Ken Shamrock, Ricardo Arona, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Kevin Randleman, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Quinton Jackson, Renzo Gracie, Vitor Belfort, and three times each against Royce Gracie and Wanderlei Silva. The Ishii fight against Ikuhisa Minowa is one worth watching. There have been rumors about the 24-year-old dropping to light heavyweight. This fight was announced just a few days ago which calls into question what sort of training camp Ishii was in. By the results of the weigh-in, it doesn't like he was going too hard. Ishii fights this one at a higher weight, 235 pounds, than his debut fight where he was only 229. Minowaman has a solid gas tank at only 193 pounds. The card is loaded with fights in the 140-pound range. Those should produce some standup wars. Aoki is always a good watch as well. His reputation took a hit when he lost to Gilbert Melendez in a Strikeforce versus DREAM matchup back in June. He's still won four-of-five fights and severely injured Tatsuya Kawajiri and Mizuto Hirota in his last two victories. Marcus Aurelio is a very good Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner. It'll be interesting to see if he can hang with Aoki and more importantly not leave the ring with a snapped limb. Fight stats don't back up Sherk's win over Dunham

It's not easy being a judge. The action in the Octagon is fast and furious, clear views of the action are sometimes blocked and there are plenty elements to block out, like the roar of 15,000-plus fans. So not every close decision is a controversial one but the split victory given to Sean Sherk over Evan Dunham appears to be a little shaky. At first glance, it looked like Sherk took the first on the benefit of several takedowns and busting open a big cut over Dunham's eye. In Rounds 2 and 3, Sherk couldn't score his takedowns and got busted up on the feet by Dunham. Yet Glenn Trowbridge and Cecil Peoples helped Sherk to a split-decision win by each giving him the nod 29-28. The fans didn't like the call and UFC president Dana White was livid with the decision. The judges also don't have the benefit of statistics during the fight. The postfight report released by FightMetric paints a pretty one-sided picture. Sherk, a wrestler by nature, only made good on 5-of-18 takedown attempts. He also improved position, to half-guard, just once. While attempting the takedowns or trying to improve position he also got caught in seven submission attempts. The stats were even worse when the fight was standing. Dunham was incredibly active attempting nearly 200 strikes. He landed an amazing 62 percent of his jabs, 93 of 148 in all.

Latest KTM 125 Duke Video Goes to the Well

Marketing in the motorcycle industry is usually derivative at best, and nothing exemplifies that sentiment more than the tried and true rebel typecast that we see slung-around in advertisements on television, print, and the web. Indianapolis welcomes the UFC with open arms (and dolls)

INDIANAPOLIS -- The UFC hit Indianapolis for the first time this week, taking over the city's sports scene. UFC president Dana White said that the promotion's first foray into the Hoosier State has already been going well."We like to go to all these new markets and introduce the live event. I think it's been one of the reasons we've grown so fast and been so successful. At the live show, we infect 18-20,000 people, and when they leave, they go and infect three people. The live event is exciting. There's this buzz and this energy. We want to go into all these new markets," White said at Thursday's press conference."We're excited to be here. This place is known as a traditional sports town. I'm proud and happy to have the UFC here now."White did not have an exact figure on ticket sales, but said that they have been "fantastic since day one."Sports bars in the downtown Wholesale District have signs up reading, "Welcome UFC Fans." On Wednesday night, Buffalo Wild Wings hosted an autograph session with local fighter Matt Mitrione, and all the waitresses wore Tapout shirts. Thursday evening, Kilroy's filled their TV screens with the UFC's "Countdown to 119" and a rerun of WEC 50.A group of around 75 fans crowded into the Old National Center -- where the Broadway show "Mary Poppins" is playing -- for the press conference on Thursday. Fans, including a young girl who carried a Brock Lesnar and Chuck Liddell doll instead of Barbies, clamored for the chance to take pictures and get autographs from the fighters on the main card. The city's main newspaper, the Indianapolis Star, has devoted column inches to the UFC, educating MMA newbies and spotlighting the locals on the card.  With the city's beloved Colts out of town, it's easier for MMA to get front page coverage.Outside of the sports scene, it's a bit harder to to tell that a major MMA event is taking over the town. There is a bigger presence reminding the city about the upcoming International Violin Competition and "Mary Poppins."But it's too early to judge if the UFC is a success in Indiana, or if it has made the often-touted financial impact on the compact Indianapolis downtown. What will tell the story is how many fans crowd into the Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday night.

The UFC and roids: Dana White says he's not the boss, the government is

Dana White finally got to vent about Chael Sonnen's positive drug test and one-year suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission. He's not happy with the criticism lobbed his way. Some fans and MMA bloggers think it's time for White to put his foot down about steroids in the sport. White said he's not the guy who makes the decisions, it's the state commissions. "The commission could give a flying rat's ass about what I think," White told the media gathered at the UFC 119 prefight presser. "They oversee me! They tell me what I'm going to do."White said stop comparing him to guys like NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA commissioner David Stern. "People say you're the commissioner of the sport. Here's the reality, the government tells my fighters what's going to happen to them," said White. "The big misconception that Dana White runs the athletic commissions couldn't be further from the truth so I have to sit back now and see what happens with Chael Sonnen."White told Ariel Helwani of mmafighting.com that there's a lot more to the Sonnen story and that we all need to wait until the appeal is heard by the California State Athletic Commission. But he did state that Sonnen has always been a standup guy and reiterated what he told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole last week. White said various commission's penalties are severe enough. White doesn't want to pile on fighters who violate drug rules. But he did take time to point out the difference between violators like Chael Sonnen and former UFC heavyweight champ Josh Barnett. "People are all going to make mistakes. I judge you by how you react to the mistakes you make," said White. "There's guys out there like Josh Barnett. Josh Barnett tested positive three times and this guy denies it every time. Everybody's a liar but him. I just saw an interview he did where he said he could really give a [expletive] about anybody else but himself. And that's why Josh Barnett isn't and will never be in the UFC. This isn't the kind of guy that I respect or want to do business with."Barnett recently signed a deal with Strikeforce. He tested positive in 2002 after UFC 36 and was stripped of his title. He also tested positive in 2009 before a scheduled fight for Affliction against Fedor Emelianenko.

The low single! Pudzianowski uses wrestling to maul Butterbean

Fat guys and wrestling don't go together. At least not with James Toney and Eric "Butterbean" Esch. Randy Couture, an accomplished amateur wrestler used the low single to takedown and eventually take out Toney. Mariusz Pudzianowski has zero wrestling background but even he knows that dudes with huge guts can't defend the lower part of their legs. Pudzianowski danced around Butterbean for a minute before he shot at the 400-pounder's leg and drove through for a takedown. On the ground, Pudzianowski unloaded with 70-plus shots before Butterbean, who was like an elephant on its back, was saved a few seconds later. A win over a grossly out of shape Butterbean, 44, isn't much to be proud of but it did allow the former World's Strongman champ to get back on the horse after he was destroyed by Tim Sylvia back in June. Pudzianowski (3-1) had major conditioning issues in that fight. He gassed within three minutes with his whole body turning purple. Pudzianowski was noticably less shredded in this fight.

The highest bidder on dozens of celebrity Twitter accounts will be rewarded by having their celeb follow them for 90 days. All the proceeds go to the efforts to build a home and school for Special Needs kids in Haiti. All proceeds from the TwitChange celebrity auction will provide aHomeInHaiti.org the means to ?nish rebuilding the Miriam Center. The Miriam Center houses, educates and loves on Haitian children with cerebral palsy, severe autism, and other major life challenges and is one of the only facilities of its kind in Haiti. The current facility houses children in the earthquake?s aftermath and is extremely overcrowed. These kids need and deserve a permanent home.@danawhite's megapack is currently $11,100 (as of Thursday night, 10 p.m. PT).The Cagewriter budget is huge so we're looking to nab at least one celebrity. We may need to beat out Anquan Boldin for Antonio Cromartie. And there's no truth to the rumor that the money is simply going to the effort to build a home for all of @a_cromartie31's kids. That one's for @chaddukes. Come on Jets' fans, Cromartie is just $51 right now.All kidding aside, there's hundreds of celebrities up for bids. Michael Strahan might be nice. We're counting on Kelly Naqi and Dr. Ian Smith staying out of the bidding for @MichaelStrahan.   What "Jersey Shore" fan wouldn't want to win the scorned Twitter account of @MTVSammi? If only the megapack included a smoosh with Sammi Sweetheart. Gayle King is up there. You say, who? Good for you. No MMA blog reader should be aware of @kinggayle unless you actually write the blog. Well-roundedness is needed in blogging and MMA. It is for charity so no jokes about Pete Carroll. Dana White hanging with 'Beavis and Butthead' guy?

Don't ever call the UFC unimaginative. The promotion might be working on something bizarre after an appearance by Mike Judge in Dana White's latest vlog. The UFC president posted a quickie vlog before Ultimate Fight Night 22. He's seen being honored in Texas' state capital and teases fans by mentioning a possible Wanderlei Silva-Chris Leben fight at Madison Square Garden. Then there's the appearance by Judge of "Beavis and Butthead" fame. Even UFC analyst Joe Rogan seems a little in awe when he meet Judge. White says the UFC and Judge will be working together. On what? This will be interesting to follow.

Return Of Four-Practice Schedule Confirmed By FIM Announcement

As reported this weekend, the four-practice schedule used at Aragon was a huge hit with the teams and riders. The general consensus was that the chance to try out big changes between sessions more than outweighed the shorter time during the session to make changes. As a result, the teams asked for a return to the four-practice schedule (FP1 and FP2 on Friday, then FP3 and QP on Saturday), preferring four 45-minute sessions to three sessions of 1 hour. Saturday's meeting of the Grand Prix Commission rubber-stamped the change, and so at the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril and the Grand Prix of Valencia, four sessions of practice will be run, with the same schedule likely to return for the whole of next year.

BMW Retains Corser In WSBK, Haslam And Toseland To Join Him?

With the MotoGP silly season more or less played out, and the World Superbike season winding to a close, the seats in World Superbikes are starting to be sorted out. The latest news comes from BMW, who today officially announced that they will be retaining their seasoned veteran Troy Corser for 2011. The announcement comes as no surprise, as the Australian former world champion has been instrumental in developing the brand new German Superbike over the past couple of years, and Corser continues to be motivated to ride at this level, despite being nearly 39 years of age.
The press release also mentions that they are not yet ready to announce their second rider, although it is certain that Spaniard Ruben Xaus will lose his seat with the Munich factory. Xaus has been very disappointing in 2010, after a big crash at the first round in Australia got his season off to a terrible start. In his place, the names of Sterilgarda Yamaha rider James Toseland and current Alstare Suzuki rider Leon Haslam are doing the rounds. Toseland's boss Roger Burnett has been insisting for quite some time now that Toseland is close to inking a deal with the German factory, though reports have also linked Toseland to a return to the Ten Kate Honda team for 2011, alongside Johnny Rea - if Ten Kate field a two-man team for next season.

Don Corleone and trash talk: Highlights from UFC 119 press conference

INDIANAPOLIS -- At the UFC 119 press conference, hometown boy Chris Lytle was clearly the crowd favorite, drawing big cheers from the crowd. The UFC 119 main players were all there.  -- Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic came in as a late replacement for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He fought just a few months ago at UFC 114, but said that deciding to fight was a no-brainer."Don Corleone sent me an offer I couldn't refuse," Cro Cop said. White and Mir both joked about Cro Cop's possible eye injury -- which was cleared by doctors -- and how they were both a little nervous about it."I actually joked with Matt Mitrione. 'Hey man. You've had two fights. Let's go out there and have a war,'" Mir said."Did we have another plan? No," White said. "We were praying that Mirko was going to be fine." -- Cro Cop went on to discuss trash talk's role in MMA. Frank Mir had plenty to say about Filipovic before the fights, but Cro Cop isn't crazy about trash talk."I think I should be respectful of fighters. This sport is brutal enough itself. I don't think you should say stupid statements or should act like savages. At the end of the day, [Frank Mir] is my brother in arms," Filipovic said. "There's no anger. I will do my best to beat him. I expect him to do the same. I see no place for insulting each other. I have never done it."-- Filipovic pointed out that this Saturday's bout will be his 70th bout. He's had 37 in MMA, 32 in K-1.-- Though wearing sunglasses -- and the best fanny pack I've ever seen -- Cro Cop said that his eye is fine.-- A reporter asked Dana White if the business was slowing down. In a word, no. "The business hasn't slowed down whatsoever. TUF still pulled great ratings. We're one of the longest-running reality shows in history. We're in the top 10. People are enjoying this season, and as far as the mainstream, we continue to grow. If you look at the economic disaster, and what's going on right now, and you look at other sports and entertainment, the UFC machine continues to roll, and we're putting on event after event. This sport continues to grow. We continue to grow. You are very misinformed, my friend," White said.-- Though not on the dais, Mitrione was at the press conference and had a few questions for his friend and mentor, Chris Lytle."If there's a fire while you're here, will you be called to fight it?" Mitrione asked Lytle, a firefighter in Indianapolis." "I hope not! I think the whole city might burn down, because all my fire department people should be watching my fight." Lytle responded. "Will you bring Serra?" Mitrione said. When Lytle said yes, White broke in. "You'd better bring somebody taller than Serra!"-- Mir said that any discussion of going to light heavyweight was premature. "If I lose Saturday, it might be easier to go to 205, because I'll be depressed and won't eat," Mir said with a laugh. "No, I spoke about it in passing, and certain people in my life responded by saying, 'There's no way in hell that can ever happen.'"-- The UFC ended the press conference by taking questions from fans. A fan asked White to come and sit with him at the top of Conseco Fieldhouse. White said, "You are a gentleman, sir. I'd love to sit with you."

Shane Mosley Open to MMA, but No Time Soon

by Michael David SmithCount Shane Mosley as one boxer who would love to give mixed martial arts a try.

During a live chat with FanHouse readers, Mosley was asked whether he'd ever follow in the footsteps of James Toney, who lost to Randy Couture last month at UFC 118, and test himself in MMA. Mosley said the idea interests him, but that he would need to take a long time training in wrestling and jiu jitsu to avoid being embarrassed the way Toney was, and he just doesn't have that kind of time as he continues to focus on his boxing career. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

After losing at Shark Fights 13, dejected Jardine even further from a UFC return

No one said it's easy to get to the UFC. Keith Jardine realized his dream back in 2006 when made the cast of Season 2 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and over the course of 13 fights he became a fan and promotional favorite. But the "Dean of Mean" ran into some hard luck and was on the wrong side of too many close decisions. For that, he got his pink slip. In an effort to get back to the big show, Jardine jumped at the chance to fight Trevor Prangley, another former UFC veteran. Unfortunately tonight at Shark Fights 13, he didn't have enough to beat Prangley either. The South African got off to a quick start and held on down the stretch to get a split decision win, 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28, over Jardine in the main event in Amarillo, Tx. That makes it five straight losses and 6-of-8 for Jardine. "It’s the biggest win of my career," said Prangley. Prangley (23-6) is a true middleweight and weighed in well under the light heavyweight limit at 202 3/4 pounds. But power wasn't an issue. He sent a message early in the fight by muscling Jardine in the clinch and landing a big knee right on his chin. Jardine's knees buckled and the shot opened up a nice gash over his left eye. Bleeding badly, Jardine was on his back underneath a nasty ground and pound fighter just two minutes into the fight. It stayed down on the mat for another two-plus minutes with Prangley landing some good elbows. The action stayed on the feet in the second but it was Prangley who once again landed the best shot when he put Jardine on his butt with an uppercut. Jardine wouldn't quit."Moving up a weight class, and to fight a guy of his caliber (was great). He sat there and ate everything I had to give him," said Prangley. "There were a couple of times when he buckled a little bit. I said 'yes it‘s over', but man he just kept coming back. I just couldn’t kill the guy."Jardine (15-9) really turned it on in the final minutes as Prangley tired badly. The South African took a ton of wicked shots but wouldn't go down. It was just enough to get the split decision. "I know he’s got great cardio working at altitude. I knew I had to win the first two and hopefully I'd have enough to finish and win the third," said Prangley. "Everyone kept asking what’s your gameplan. I kept saying 'I have no idea what to do against this guy' but I did pull off a victory." The lack of a gameplan might be Jardine's biggest problem right now. He's a well-rounded fighter but too often he fights into his opponent's style or doesn't push the pace enough. Prangley's had conditioning issues in the past. If that weakness had been seized upon by Jardine, we might be looking at a return to UFC relatively soon. Now he needs to go back to the drawing board.

Sneak peek at Jens Pulver documentary

Jens Pulver, a pioneer in MMA, is also the subject of "Driven," an independent documentary spotlighting the fighter. Take a sneak peek here, but be warned, some of the language used is not safe for work. Pulver is one of MMA's most fascinating characters. After living through an abusive childhood, he opened the door for lighter weight fighters, then coached them on one of the more interesting seasons of "The Ultimate Fighter."The piece of the documentary shown above was shot before Pulver's last loss in the WEC, a submission by Javier Vazquez at WEC 47 in Columbus. (Since then, he lost again to Diego Garijo at War on the Mainland.) In a portrait of Pulver, you should see a study of contrasts. A fan-friendly fighter who gives his all in the cage contrasted by a guy who has lost eight of his last nine bouts and can't seem to walk away from the game.

Nate Marquardt TKOs Rousimar Palhares at UFC Fight Night 22

by Michael David SmithIn a bizarre ending to the main event at UFC Fight Night 22, Nate Marquardt knocked out Rousimar Palhares with a series of huge punches on the ground -- only to have Palhares appear to complain afterward that Marquardt had been cheating by greasing up his legs.

Palhares seemed to have Marquardt exactly where he wanted him on the ground, sinking in one of his signature heel hooks. But Marquardt pulled his leg free, and when he did, Palhares complained to referee Herb Dean that Marquardt must have been greasing. It was stupid of Palhares to complain to the referee during the fight, and Marquardt made him pay for it, landing a hard punch and then a bunch more punches until Dean stopped the fight. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Heavyweight phenom Duffee cut from the UFC

Our last UFC image of Todd Duffee, in the black shortsTodd Duffee's career with the UFC lasted 12 minutes and 39 seconds. The heavyweight who shot into prominence after knocking out Tim Hague in seven seconds was cut from the UFC.The 25-year-old couldn't sustain the meteoric rise that happened after he broke the UFC fastest knockout record. He suffered an injury before a scheduled bout with Paul Buentello at UFC 107. At UFC 114, Duffee beat up on Mike Russow for 2 1/2 rounds before Russow came back to land a perfect right, knocking Duffee out.  Sports Illustrated's Josh Gross reported that there were some problems between UFC president Dana White and Duffee, but that this is hardly the end of Duffee's MMA career. Duffee's manager Alex Davis said that Todd will continue to fight."It's unfortunate, but Todd's an asset and he will keep on fighting. He is a young kid and gets a lot of attention," Davis said.Duffee's appeal to any MMA organization is clear. He's a young and exciting fighter who looks like he was the hero of a 1950s movie about truth, goodness and the American Way. Strikeforce is strongest at heavyweight, so he would be a natural fit there.

Heath and 'JT Money' might be turning the corner after MFC 26

Over the years it's been difficult to talk any sense into guys like Jesse Taylor and David Heath. There's no arguing that they both have talent. The UFC recognized that. Taylor was a cast member during Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and Heath fought five times for the promotion. But too often they've both been their own worst enemies. It's part of the reason they were both fighting in Edmonton tonight. The good news is both are showing signs of wising up. Taylor grinded out a tough win over Tom Watson while Heath scored a spectacular TKO finish of Solomon Hutcherson. Taylor is 14 fights removed from his stint on TUF 7 but he's still trying to erase the stigma of getting booted off the show. He was one fight shy of going for the TUF 7 title and a guaranteed contract with the promotion. After a semifinals win, he decided to celebrate his spot by going out for a night on the town in Las Vegas. Sin City got the best of him. After a night of partying, he arrived the Palace Station Hotel and kicked out a limousine window. Once inside the casino, owned by the Fertittas (they also own the UFC), Taylor harassed employees and customers. In a painful final episode, Taylor begged for forgiveness but was sent packing by UFC owner Dana White.Heath did nothing that serious but his stubbornness cost him his job and sent him packing for the minors. He's tiny for a light heavyweight but insisted on trying to compete with the big boys. Heath bit off a little more than he could chew when he faced Renato "Babalu" Sobral at UFC 74. Before the fight, Heath (pictured at the weigh-in) insulted the Brazilian's wife. As a result, Babalu choked out Heath and then refused to let go of the anaconda choke for a few extra seconds. Babalu was booted from the promotion and Heath lasted one more fight in the UFC but got thrown around like a rag doll by Tim Boetsch. It took two years and a 6-3 record in lesser promotions for Heath to finally realize middleweight is where he should be fighting. The revelation paid off tonight against Hutcherson. It didn't happen easily though. Hutcherson scored a takedown early in the first and kept Heath on his back for the remainder of the round. But Heath wasn't entirely helpless. He let loose a huge elbow from the bottom that broke Hutcherson's nose which starting squirting blood. Whether it was seeing his own blood or the pain, Hutcherson was a different fighter in the second.Heath's boxing took over. The Californian jumped into a beautifully timed Superman punch (pictured above) that floored Hutcherson. He pounded away with four more hammerfists that bounced Hutcherson's head off the canvas. Heath still showboats too much and takes way too many shots but he's going to win some fights down at 185 pounds.Taylor still has to work on his stamina but he was overpowering for 12-of-15 minutes against Watson. "JT Money" took the Jackson's Submission fighter down whenever he wanted. He worked what looked like a nasty rear-naked choke for over a minute in the second but Watson survived. The takedowns and top control led to a unanimous decision win, 30-26 on all cards. It was Taylor's 17th win.The big upset of the night came in the main event where MFC favorite Ryan Ford was shocked by Douglas Lima (pictured below on the left). MFC president Mark Pavelich suggested that Ford was going to get another shot at 170 champion Pat Healy with a victory. That won't happen now. Lima gave Ford a grappling lesson and arm-barred him at 0:48 of the second round. In a one-sided affair, Dwayne Lewis destroyed former UFC fighter Mike Nickels. Lewis caught Nickels with an early uppercut. Nickels crumbled to the mat and turtled up. For some reason, the referee allowed Lewis to get off 10 more shots before stopping the fight at 1:30 of the first.

Koscheck talks Holly Madison, villainy and Georges St. Pierre

When Josh Koscheck burst onto the MMA scene, he was an accomplished wrestler, but a raw fighter. A spot on the cast of the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" changed all that. The unknown fighter has turned into one of the more successful and popular fighters to come from the reality show that helped build the UFC. Now, Koscheck is back on the set of TUF for its 12th season, debuting Wednesday night on Spike TV. This time, he's the coach, facing off with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. He will face GSP in the cage on Dec. 11 at UFC 124.For Koscheck, the experience of returning to the show was surreal. "When I first went on TUF, I was just a wrestler. I had no idea how to fight. I had no training," Koscheck told Cagewriter. "Wrestling was my training. I was pretty much just focused on learning how to fight, and now here I am, six years later, fighting for the world championship."   That doesn't mean he was uncomfortable in front of the cameras."I love the spotlight. I love the power of television. It is the greatest tool in the world to get your news out there. The more you get on TV, the more you have TV following you, the more money that equates to, the more fame you have, and fame equals money."He doesn't even mind when the publicity is wrong. Earlier this year, a rumor spread that Koscheck was dating Playboy model Holly Madison."I like publicity. Whether it's good or bad. It's going to get people talking, it's going to put your name in the spotlight. I'm not dating Holly Madison. I never was. We're good friends. I'm not saying there's never a chance. We're good friends, but right now, I'm focused on winning fights and building a career rather than looking for a girlfriend.""Who's Dan Hardy?"Koscheck laughed off comments that fellow fighters Dan Hardy and Shinya Aoki had made about wrestling."Who's Dan Hardy? Let's be real. I don't know what they're saying, but if they want to do kickboxing, then they should go find a new profession. This is mixed martial arts. If you want to learn how to keep the fight standing and not be so boring and get taken down, then cry about getting taken down, go find a wrestling team and learn how to wrestle. Simple as that. If you don't want to get taken down and beat up, learn how to get up. Learn how to stop the takedowns."As a national champion for Edinboro University's wrestling team, Koscheck knows the value of the sport. "If people understood wrestling more and understood what it takes to compete at that level, they would give it more of a chance. There's thousands and thousands of young kids out there aspiring to be great wrestlers, they're having less and less chances of going to college because they're taking programs away.""Life would be boring if you didn't have controversy"Koscheck promises that he did his part in making TUF an interesting show."If this show is successful, it's probably not going to be because of Georges St. Pierre's personality," he said with a laugh.Koscheck knows he's seen as a heel. Though he genuinely is a nice guy in person, he says being a villain comes naturally."I didn't have to work on it. I've always been an ornery little [expletive]. I have a knack for getting under people's skin. I want to be an entertainer. I want to be the guy who makes money outside of the cage. If I've got to be the villain to do it, then I'll do that.  "Life would be boring if you didn't have controversy. This sport would be boring if you had guys who were just like a Georges, who looks like a robot, talks like a robot, and fights like a robot. You need guys out there with personality. There's not many guys who are out there who are willing to do that. I'm willing to do that.  "Georges St. Pierre was a better guy that day" He's now looking forward to fighting the "robotic" GSP. He lost the first chance at GSP in a unanimous decision at UFC 74, just two years into his fight career. Still, he won't make excuses."Regardless of [whether] it was too early or not, I had the opportunity to go in and win, and I didn't do that. I'm never going to make an excuse saying, it was too early. I was too young. Georges St. Pierre was a better guy that day. I know what I've got to do to make changes, and to take my second chance and come out with a victory. Come December 11, in Montreal, I have to find a way to win. I plan on doing that."Koscheck does not plan on resting on his laurels when facing GSP. "I want to keep this fight in position to win. I have to make sure my wrestling is up to par, because George is one of the best at disguising wrestling in MMA. He's fast. I have to be able to control the fight and put the fight in my position. I believe that my best chance is to keep the fight on my feet and knock Georges out."Koscheck believes that he's in the better position to win since GSP will have more pressure on him, fighting in front of a home crowd and defending the belt. "He's already beat me once. I have no pressure to go into Montreal and win this belt. He's the guy who's the champ. I'm the underdog. I like being the underdog. I like that I get to bet money on myself, which, I already have. I like that I get to hear a lot of 'F YOU KOSCHECK!' and a lot of boos." "I plan on pissing off 22,000 people on December 11." Check back Wednesday for more from Koscheck.

2010 Aragon 125cc FP1 Result - Terol Leads Rain-Hit Session

Though the rain in Spain falls mainly along the mountains fringing the north coast - contrary to George Bernard Shaw's assertion - it appears bent on hitting the plain today. The first drops of rain started to fall at Aragon - on the edge of Spain's Meseta, the plain referred to in Pygmalion - halfway through the first session of free practice for the 125cc class, times dropping drastically soon afterwards.
Up until the rain started to fall, it was Bancaja Aspar's Nico Terol who led the way, continuing his strong form of the past couple of races. Tuenti Derbi's Pol Espargaro was a quarter of a second behind Terol, and nearly four tenths ahead of Terol's teammate Bradley Smith, while Japanese rider Tomoyoshi Koyama ended the session in 4th.
The rain is expected to continue for most of the rest of the day, with showers getting heavier as the day progresses.

NY assemblyman Bob Reilly: Violence is not good for society

Hey, do you want to listen to someone ignorant but powerful speak about MMA? Here you go! New York assemblyman Bob Reilly is a guest on HDNet's Inside MMA on Friday evening, and he says that the violence in the cage is not good for society. He tries to address violence in other sports, like football and boxing, but is unsuccessful at explaining how the violence on the football field is different than the violence in the cage. We've discussed Assemblyman Reilly and his lack of understanding of MMA several times before, so there is no need to rehash why he is wrong. I give Reilly credit for meeting his opponents on their field, but it's a shame that he didn't walk in with an open mind.Watch the full report on Inside MMA on HDNet at 9 p.m. ET.

Cal Crutchlow Teleconference Transcript: On World Superbikes, MotoGP, And What Rossi Did To The R1

Moderator: Good morning, everybody. I'm John Gardner, the media manager for Miller Motorsports Park, and we're back for another teleconference with the riders in the HANNspree Superbike World Championship. Today we're pleased to have with us Cal Crutchlow, who rides the No. 35 Yamaha YZF R1 for the Yamaha Sterilgarda team. Cal, of course, won both ends of his home race in Silverstone last month, he's been on the podium seven times this season and has five poles. In 2009, he was the World Supersport Champion before graduating to the Yamaha World Superbike team this year. He is currently fifth in the championship with 217 points behind Max Biaggi with 397, Leon Haslam with 339, Jonathan Rea with 288 and Carlos Checa with 224 heading into the penultimate race of the season at Imola on the 26th of this month. As you all probably know, Cal has been chosen to move up to the Monster Energy Tech 3 MotoGP Team for next year, so we have quite a bit to talk about. Cal, welcome and we thank you for being here with us today.
Cal Crutchlow: Thank you very much. Thanks for inviting me along.
Moderator: So here we are. We've got two rounds left to go in the season, four races total. You are fifth and you're just about seven points behind Checa. What are your objectives for the remainder of this season?

Some of Boston's old guard media not impressed by MMA

MMA isn't for everyone. We know that. Too often when folks from the 50-plus demographic speak about the sport they complain about the violence and the blood. So it cames as no shocker that there was complaining from veteran writers like Bob Ryan and Dan Shaugnessy. But they took a different stance both pointing out that they didn't see what all the excitement was about."In all honesty, I’m just telling the truth. The biggest revelation I got from
spending that evening at the Garden was how astonishingly BOOOOORRING this thing
is," Ryan said CSN's New England’s "Sports Tonight". "It is the most overrated … I do not remotely understand the appeal. There
isn’t enough blood, there isn’t enough action."Ryan said the first fight on the pay-per-view between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz was solid but he didn't enjoy the ground work in the later fights."The fans don’t like the wrestling," said Ryan, who is now an expert after taking in one live MMA card.Ryan also knows how knowledgeable each of the 15,000-plus in attendance were. "There are a sophisticated few martial arts experts who appreciate
when there is a well-executed martial arts move to create a submission, yes,
that is not the majority, it’s a small minority," said Ryan. Apparently, Ryan spoke with lots of fans to find out what they enjoy. "The people want to see boxing,
slugging, and they want to see when a guy gets down his face punched, that’s
what gets them excited. It is the most boring nonsense," said Ryan. "Most of the fights in the
early, and granted it was described to me as batting practice, the early bouts,
are guys in wrestling matches in which they were bad collegiate wrestling with
nothing happening." Who gave Ryan that description? Someone on press row? We'd love to know what MMA media regular says the early fights are "batting practice". This is why shows like CSN's "Sports Tonight" and ESPN's "Around the Horn" are unbearable at times. The panel is made of older media dudes who are speaking for the fans yet most haven't had anything beyond a 10 second conversation with a fan in 10 years.  The crew on the embedded CSN video was mostly pro-MMA. Longtime boxing and NFL scribe Ron Borges has more than given MMA a fair shake. He's the "expert" on this panel. Sadly, you can't count on one hand the number of boxing writers who've really embraced MMA. Check out the lead host Mike Felger, he describes the Davis-Diaz fight as sort of gruesome and then says he loved it!Quotes via Fight Opinion

It started with former UFC welterweight contender Dan Hardy, who complained about wrestling dominating MMA after his countrymen, Andre Winner and Nick Osipczak, both lost in decisions after UFC 118. Rather than saying 'oh, these guys can't wrestle', I think the problem is there's beginning to be too much wrestling in UFC Octagon, not too little of it in the gym. There are a lot of people out there calling themselves 'UFC fighters' who are nothing of the kind. In the UFC, you should go for finishes. He must not have watched the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen fight, where Sonnen -- an elite wrestler -- lost because he aggressively went after Silva. In the same article on thisisNottingham.co.uk, Hardy says how he has spent three months in the U.S. trying to shore up his wrestling. A whole three months to face fighters who have been wrestling for a lifetime.  Japanese fighter Shinya Aoki, who fights both for DREAM and Strikeforce, piled on to Hardy's comments. From AOL Fanhouse: "The American wrestling style - punching a little bit, getting a takedown and moving to side control to win the round has no risk. It's an easier fight. It's just using the judges. They don't even have to worry about injuries or anything like that. There is no risk."Aoki must have never seen a match when a fighter gets kneed while going for a takedown, or gets caught in a guillotine. Apparently, he doesn't perceive that risk.  Aoki and Hardy both prefer complaining. Nate Marquardt and Kenny Florian are both fighters who would rather improve themselves than complain.Marquardt, who is fighting Rousimar Palhares at Ultimate Fight Night 22 next week, was beaten by a wrestler in Chael Sonnen."I was unable to defend the takedowns in my last fight, and that's why I lost the fight," Marquardt commented. "Now I'm going to be more prepared to defend the takedown no matter who I'm fighting, and I worked hard on my wrestling and I continue to work hard on my wrestling."Kenny Florian took a similar track, hiring a wrestling coach just days after his wrestling-filled loss to Gray Maynard.   If Hardy and Aoki are so concerned, then they need to train to neutralize their opponent's wrestling, or knock them out or submit them to win. Instead of complaining about the guy across from them in the cage, they could just get the KO themselves.

McKee survives 'win or retire' match, smashes Azevedo

Maybe more fighters need to listen to critical broadcasters and fans before their fights. Antonio McKee was hearing a rash of criticism before his contest tonight at MFC 26 in Canada. The veteran fighter hasn't lost since 2003 but got smashed by HDNet analyst Guy Metzger for being boring. Hell, he's a champion with the promotion and even it didn't have enough confidence in his fighting style to make his fight the main event. With a flair reminiscent of pro wrestling's "Loser Leaves Town" match, McKee fired back by guaranteeing a win and an exciting finish. If he didn't deliver, he said he'd retire. An inspired McKee made good on the promise. He unloaded two vicious elbows, opened up a nasty cut on Luciano Azevedo's brow to force a stoppage and get the win. Not only did he avoid retiring, he may have gotten himself a much sought after fight with a bigger promotion. "I said if I don’t get this guy in first or second round, I'm retiring," McKee said after the win. "I gotta give Guy Metzger credit, he brought this out of me."The victory moved him to 25-3-2 and it secured his first finish in a fight since 2005. Including a draw, he's now won 13 straight fights. Why is he relegated to fighting for promotions like MFC? Fans and MMA bloggers labeled him "Mr. Decision" and said his style is boring. McKee is a huge trash talker but he rarely backed it up in the cage with vicious finishes. He got one tonight. McKee, a wrestler by nature, scored a takedown just 55 seconds into the fight. Once it hit the deck, McKee looked to control Azevedo's arms so he could land a big strike. Did he ever! McKee unloaded two huge elbows near Azevedo's forehead that busted him wide open. The Brazilian freaked out and flipped over. The cut was like a faucet spurting blood from his head. The fight was over. Well, it should've been. Azevedo essentially gave up but was given the benefit of having the ringside doctor check his wound. It didn't matter. He didn't want to go on and McKee was given the win at 3:11 of the first round.  "I guess it's true, you can teach an old dog new tricks," said the 40-year old McKee. "I'm working on my strikes. My ground is getting ridiculous. I'm happy to be here and kick his young ass."McKee has dreamed of a shot in the UFC. Part of his recent explosion included claims that he's not being given his due because he's African-American. McKee said his ground and pound style is no different than white fighters in the UFC like Georges St. Pierre, Randy Couture and Matt Hughes.  "I'm just so strong down there," said McKee. "I'm just waiting for the UFC to release B.J. Penn or Sean Sherk and beat their ass up too."McKee probably deserves at least one shot at the big show. Even if his style has been less than exciting, a seven-year win streak is nothing to sneeze at. Maybe all his talk has caught the attention of the MMA giant and he'll get a chance as a fill-in before the end of 2010.

Pearson works with Edgar to train for Miller and beyond

Cole Miller is concentrating on his big fight tomorrow night against Ross Pearson. Pearson wants to win at Ultimate Fight Night 22 but he may have a bigger goal in mind. The Brit, who won Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter", is speding more time in the United States, training his wrestling and takedown defense. He did so recently with a visit to work with UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar and Ricardo Almeida."I have to come out here to the States to train with these
guys, or I have to bring those guys to my gym back in England, so either way,
I’m going to be learning the wrestling," Pearson told Eliot Olshansky from Bleacher Report. "I’m not stupid to think that I’m going
to beat these guys just by watching, you know? You need to get in there and
train with these guys, develop your game." Pearson, 25, admits that seeing fellow Brits Dan Hardy and Paul Daley get manhandled by good MMA wrestlers, spurred his trip to the U.S.  "It opened me eyes a lot to get the chance to go out train with
Frankie Edgar and the Rutgers wrestling team, just to see what I needed to
improve, and what I needed to do to get to the level of these guys. I’m never
going to learn it back at home, where none of the guys are advanced masters of
wrestling, you know?" Miller isn't a traditional wrestler but he's very good grappler and submission artist."Definitely, the biggest challenge for me is if the fight goes to the floor. Cole
is just really good and talented on the floor. He’s pulled off some slick
submissions. He’s very active; he doesn’t rest like some of the guys you see. He
goes in there to finish fights, which I admire."This is definitely striker versus grappler. Miller's striking is solid and his length can give other lightweights trouble, but he'll want to get this fight to the ground. In this video, Miller says he was a little confused by Pearson's trip to work with wrestlers like Edgar. He speculated that thinks maybe Pearson thinks he's going to smash him and is prepping for the future (1:25 mark). Either way, it's a good move for Pearson to work in the U.S. He has a high ceiling and why shouldn't he work all elements of his game regardless of whether it perfectly matches his current opponent? Pearson and Miller meet int he first bout of the televised portion of UFN 22 on Spike. It should provide action. Pearson (11-3, 3-0 UFC) won Fight of the Night honors his last time while Miller (16-4, 5-2 UFC)  has only had one of his seven UFC fights go the distance.

Former heavyweight champs Barnett and Rodriguez employed again

Someone call the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Josh Barnett and Ricco Rodriguez are both employed by MMA promotions again. Strikeforce announced today that they have signed Josh Barnett to a multi-fight deal.“Strikeforce is the home of the best heavyweight division in the world and I’m proud to be able to call it my home now,” said Barnett via a Strikeforce press release. “I’m looking forward to competing amongst the greatest fighters in the world and fighting my way to another world title.”This is a shot at redemption for Barnett, a fighter with a checkered history. Despite being talented enough to win to UFC championship in 2002, Barnett was stripped of the belt immediately after because he tested positive for a banned substance. He played a major role in the downfall of Affliction's fighting promotion by being denied a license for a bout with Fedor Emelianenko because he tested positive in a pre-fight drug test. Since then, he's failed to show up for hearings about getting his license back. As of April, the issue of his license in California is still unresolved.   Barnett has continued to fight in promotions overseas, and hasn't lost since a 2006 PRIDE bout with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. His last win was with Australia's Impact FC over Geronimo dos Santos, a first-round TKO.No fights have been scheduled yet for Barnett, but maybe now fight fans
will get to see the Barnett/Fedor Emelianenko bout that never happened
because of Affliction's demise. Rodriguez's second chance During Thursday evening's broadcast, it was announced that Rodriguez signed with Bellator. He will face Dave Herman on Sept. 30 in Lake Charles, La.Rodriguez beat Randy Couture in 2002 to win the UFC heavyweight belt, but lost it in the next fight to Tim Sylvia. After a stint on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" and ballooning up to 330 lbs., he has become refocused on training. This year, he has fought six times, and won six times.  Herman will be a much tougher test for Rodriguez. He has 19 wins, and not a decision among them.
