Strikeforce develops its future stars on its Challengers shows. Three months back, Sarah Kaufman came up big with a win over Roxanne Modafferi to move up Strikeforce's shows on Showtime. Las night, it was time for Roger Bowling and Lavar Johnson to land that signature win that'd get them the call up. Johnson came through with a KO finish of Virgil Zwicker while Roger Bowling showed he needs a little more seasoning during a loss to Bobby Voelker.
Early in the fight, the 6-foot-4, 251-pound Johnson had to deal with the speed of Zwicker. He took some good licks - leg kicks and some straight rights - before unloading on the smaller heavyweight. Ninety seconds into the first, with little regard for Zwicker's power, the big man began to swing for the fences. After some huge uppercuts, Zwicker crumbled to the mat. Johnson didn't have to throw another shot in getting his third Challenger Series win at 2:17 of the first.
"I hit him hard a few times but he was in it for the fight. He made it a good fight," said Johnson.
Johnson (15-3) said he's ready for the step up to Showtime's main cards.
"I'm ready for the big show. I want to chase down some of those big name guys and see if I have what it takes or not. I'm not afraid of an ass whuppin'," said Johnson.
Johnson, 33, mentioned names like Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers.
Bowling (8-1) looked awesome early in his fight. His speed overwhelmed Voelker but he got a little left hook happy. Voelker lost the first but started to time that Bowling leaping left hook. Voelker had Bowling missing badly in the opening minutes of the second and fired back with some hard shots. That's when Bowling went for a takedown. It got stuffed and instead of scrambling back to his feet, Bowling sat there on all fours allowing Voelker to tee off. He landed six huge shots and it was downhill from there for Bowling.
Bowling got back to his feet but then tried another sloppy takedown that was thwarted. Voelker got top control and never relinquished it. He stayed busy with punches and hammerfists. Bruised and bloodied on his face, Bowling eventually covered up and turned to his side. The referee had to save him giving Voelker (23-8) the win at 3:58 of the second.

After UFC 100, Brock Lesnar was labeled an unstoppable force. Following a rough performance at UFC 116 against Shane Carwin, that kind of talk has died down. Was Lesnar overrated or is Carwin just that good? The next guy to put Lesnar's reputation to the test is Cain Velasquez. He's getting a lot of respect from bettors and fight insiders. Is he big enough to lock horns with Lesnar? Or will he wear out the monster?
Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and Larry Pepe from ProMMARadio joined me on RawVegas.tv to breakdown the big fights in Anaheim this weekend.

The weather at Estoril has taken a turn for the worse, with driving rain leaving standing water on the Portuguese circuit, and high winds making riding dangerous. The 125cc qualifying session was postponed before it started, followed by the postponement of the MotoGP session less than an hour later. Currently, Race Direction is due to issue a decision on cancellation of all qualifying this afternoon at 2:30pm. Given that the weather and winds do not look like abeying, the afternoon looks like being lost to the weather.
If qualifying is cancelled, then the grid will be set on the overall best time set in the three sessions so far, as happened in Sepang. For MotoGP, that would see the front two rows of the grid start in the order they finished in FP2, with Jorge Lorenzo on pole, with Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi beside him on the front row.

Practice got underway at Estoril in light rain, but the weather quickly took a turn for the worse, the rain becoming very intense by the end of the first session of practice, the 125cc class. Bradley Smith topped the timesheets in the session, putting in a fast lap early on, but the final standings were relatively meaningless, with a difference of over 21 seconds from fastest to slowest. British rider Danny Webb and his Andalucia Cajasol teammate Alberto Moncayo took 2nd and 3rd, ahead of Stipa Molenaar's Randy Krummenacher, but Krummenacher was already over 5 seconds slower than Smith's fastest lap.
Forecast for the rest of the day is for strong winds and storms, calling into question the usefulness the rest of the day.

Testing concluded Friday for the World Superbike series at Aragon, with Max Biaggi finally beating the time set by Carlos Checa on the Althea Ducati on day 1. The WSBK champion had spent all three days working on the setup of the new Brembo brakes for his Alitalia Aprilia, before turning his attention to putting in a fast lap at the end of the test. Tom Sykes was 2nd fastest on day 3, though still not quite as fast as Checa had been on day 1, the Yorkshireman's 2011 spec ZX-10R showing a lot of promise for the new season.
Leon Haslam finally put together a good lap on the BMW, the Bavarian factory pouring a lot of resources into working on the bike, their hard work paying off with an improvement of a full second off the 2010 runner up's previous lap time. Michel Fabrizio ended day 3 in 4th on the Alstare Suzuki, over a second off Biaggi's time.

The atrocious weather let up a little late in the morning at Estoril, just enough to allow the large part of the Moto2 field to brave the rain and wind and lap the Portuguese circuit. Fastest man at the end of the day - despite an impressive crash at he end of the main straight - was Marc VDS Racing's Scott Redding, the British rider topping the timesheets by over 1.6 seconds.
In 2nd place came rain specialist Ant West aboard the MZ, but perhaps the biggest surprise of the session was Kenan Sofuoglu's 3rd fastest time. The FP1 session was the 2010 World Supersport champion first outing at the Portuguese track, and his first laps in anger aboard the Technomag CIP Suter machine, after a brief test at Albacete earlier this week. Sofuoglu was two seconds slower than Redding, but just a few hundredths ahead of Redding's teammate Hector Faubel.
The break in the weather looks to be just temporary, though. The rain is expected to turn heavy again this afternoon, from around the time the bikes are scheduled to get back on track for FP2.
