Being last to go out worked in the favor of the Moto2 riders at Phillip Island, as the rain that had lashed the 125cc practice and the start of MotoGP practice had dried up, along with the surface of the Australian track perched on the edge of the Southern Ocean. Alex de Angelis led for a large portion of practice, but the JIR Motobi rider met with a stiff challenge from Marc VDS Racing's Scott Redding in the final minutes, the 17-year-old Briton taking over top spot for a few minutes, before De Angelis settled the issue to his advantage, topping the timesheets by just 0.018 seconds ahead of Redding. Spanish rider Fonsi Nieto had a strong outing on the Holiday Gym Moriwaki, finishing 3rd ahead of Mapfre Aspar's Julian Simon, though both men were over four tenths behind De Angelis. Newly crowned Moto2 champion Toni Elias erred on the side of caution in the still tricky conditions, setting just the 15th fastest time nearly two seconds off De Angelis' pace.
